The New York Jets are set to release veteran safety Adrian Amos. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, there was a mutual desire from both sides to part ways.

Amos will land on waivers once his release gets officially confirmed. If unclaimed, he will become a free agent and get an opportunity to sign with a team of his linking.

The Jets signed Amos to a one-year, $1.75 million deal in the offseason after starting safety Chuck Clark was ruled out for the entire 2023 with a knee injury. Amos was projected to fill in for Clark, but ended up being jumped over by second-year safety Tony Adams on the depth chart.

Amos featured in 11 games and made three starts this season, but his playing time diminished as the season progressed. He had 23 tackles and one pass defended.

The Jets are reportedly moving on from Amos in order to open room for Ashtyn Davis and Jarrick Bernard-Converse. Davis, a third-round selection in 2020, has 18 tackles, four passes defended, and two fumble recoveries in 2023. Rookie Bernard-Converse, on the other hand, played just 15 snaps this season, with all of them coming on special teams.

Prior to joining the Jets, Adrian Amos played with the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers. Despite having a down campaign, Amos will likely find a new landing spot sooner than later, most likely with a contender looking to add more depth to their secondary.

The New York Jets continue to pick off the Green Bay Packers for players. According to multiple reports, veteran safety Adrian Amos, who spent the past four seasons in Green Bay, agreed to join the Jets on a one-year deal.

Amos reportedly inked a deal that will see him earn up to $4 million in 2023.

The Jets already added four former Packers’ players this offseason. They traded for star quarterback Aaron Rodgers and signed wideouts Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb alongside offensive lineman Billy Turner in free agency.

While Amos isn’t expected to be a starter, he will likely be the next man up. Entering the training camp, last year’s starter Jordan Whitehead and newly-acquired strong safety Chuck Clark are penciled at the top of the Jets’ depth chart.

Adrian Amos spent the first four years of his career with the Chicago Bears before joining the Packers on a four-year, $37 million contract in 2019. Since then, he has been one of the most consistent defensive players in the league.

Amos started every game as a Packer and was one of just four defensive players in the NFL to do so in the past four years. He made 362 tackles, 4.0 sacks, seven interceptions, and 30 passes defended during that time.

In previous years, Green Bay Packers rarely took part in the free agency, opting to construct their roster via the draft and focus the attention to their own free agent. Well, it seems that this approach is now out of the door.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, Green Bay added two highly coveted players on the defense in outside Linebacker Za’Darius Smith and safety Adrian Amos. Smith, who previously played for Baltimore Ravens, will reportedly get a four-year, $66 million deal while Amos, who played with Chicago Bears in 2018, will ink a four-year, $37 million contract.

Rapoport also reports that Packers’ new general manager Brian Gutekunst won’t stop there. Gutekunst is working on a deal to get former Washington Redskins edge rusher Preston Smith on a four-year, $52 million deal.

Za’Darius Smith was a fourth-round pick by Ravens in 2014 and immediately impacted the team by playing 15 games his rookie year and having 30 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and two passes defended. Smith’s career stats include 119 tackles, 18.5 sacks, and three forced fumbles.

Adrian Amos was a fifth-round pick in 2015 by Green Bay’s bitter rivals Chicago Bears. During his time with the Bears, Amos established himself as one of the more reliable safeties in football, playing a total of 60 games so far. His career stats include 274 tackles, 2.0 sacks, three interceptions, and one defensive touchdown.

Preston Smith has also proved himself as an impactful player since entering the league in 2015 as a second round pick. His NFL stats include 167 tackles, 24.5 sacks, four interceptions and four forced fumbles.
