In what has been a bizarre and unprecedented season for English soccer, the 2019-20 campaign finally came to a close on Saturday as Arsenal defeated London rivals Chelsea to win the FA Cup.

The Gunners, who limped through a disappointing 2019-20 season in many respects which ended with them finishing in eighth place in the Premier League, were at least able to end their season on a high note with their big win at Wembley.

Things didn’t start out great for Arsenal after Chelsea sensation Christian Pulisic put his team ahead 0-1 in the fifth minute of the match, digging an early hole for Arsenal.

Only 23 minutes later, however, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang won a penalty after blowing by Cesar Azpilicueta in the box, drawing a foul. He converted the spot-kick and evened up the match at one.

Things continued in a deadlock well after the half until Aubemeyang found the net once again, chipping the ball over Chelsea keeper Willy Caballero to give his team a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.

After the final whistle blew, Arsenal’s roster and coach Mikel Arteta were grinning ear-to-ear as they lifted the FA Cup trophy, another nice piece of hardware for their collection and a guarantee of Europa League participation next season.

Arsenal surprised pretty much everyone on Saturday night, racing past Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City side to a 2-0 win in the FA Cup semi-finals, guaranteeing them a spot to play for a trophy in 2020.

The Gunners won on the back of two Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang goals at Wembley Stadium against a Man City side that was favored to advance to attempt to defend its title in the English knockout tournament.

Aubameyang found the net for the first time in the 19th minute of the match after a Nicolas Pepe cross found him at the far post and the Gabonese striker beat Ederson to the opposite post.

He then scored again at 71′ as Manchester City pushed and pushed for an equalizer in the second half. Aubameyang got behind a tired group of City defenders and slipped the ball between Ederson’s legs to give his team the definitive score.

Arsenal, which has seen a deep league disappointment this season as they stand in 10th place in the Premier League standings, will have a chance to play in the 2020-21 Europa League if they are able to claim their first trophy since they won the 2017 FA Cup.

Arsenal will face Chelse in the competition’s final on Saturday, September 1st at Wembley.
