The Laver Cup kicked off on 20 September in Geneva, Switzerland, where Team Europe find themselves playing against Team World in a series of singles as well as doubles matches.
The opening day of the tournament saw Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev take on their Team World opponents, American Jack Sock and Canadian Denis Shapovalov. Federer and Zverev defeated their opponents 6-3 7-5 to hand the victory to Team Europe.
There were three singles matches on the day, starting with Greece’s Stephanos Tsitsipas coming up against American Taylor Fritz. This hard-fought match went in Tsitsipas’ favor, with the Team Europe member winning 6-2 1-6 10-7.
In what was arguably the tightest match of the day, Austrian Dominic Thiem overcame Denis Shapovalov with a scoreline of 6-4 5-7 13-11. While Team Europe blazed into a significant lead, Team World did manage to register a win on the opening day, with American Jack Sock defeating Italian Fabio Fognini 1-6 6-7.
