There were stunning points, admirable comebacks, and a desire to win on both sides. In the end, it was Sabalenka who once again got the better of Pegula.
Displaying an impressive return game and hitting 31 winners, Sabalenka won the match in straight sets (7-5, 6-2). It was her first career Miami Open title with her previous best reach at the tournament being quarter-finals in 2021 and 2023.
Sabalenka previously lost two finals she played, the Australian Open and Indian Wells, and was determined to end the streak.
“I’m speechless,” Sabalenka said after the match. “The last couple of finals were really tough, tight, and close ones for me. Going into this one I was so focused on myself, I was super-focused and I was playing point by point. Now it feels super-special. I’m just speechless right now and super-happy with the title, first one in Miami.”
The 2025 Miami Open was the third straight time that Sabalenka and Pegula faced each other in the finals of a tournament played on American soil. They went against each other at the 2024 Cincinnati Open and 2024 US Open, with Sabalenka emerging victorious on those two occasions as well.

According to the official announcement, Williams received a wild-card initiation and will be part of the main draw for the 2025 edition of the tournament, which is now known as the BNP Paribas Open. Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova also received a wild-card entry in women’s singles.
Williams last competed at the Miami Open in March of last year, being eliminated in the first round after losing in straight sets to Diana Shnaider. She hasn’t played an official match since then, sparking rumors about her potential retirement.
Williams has nine Indian Wells appearances in her storied career, reaching the semi-finals on three occasions. Her last appearance came in 2024 and ended with a first-round loss against Nao Hibino.
Williams boycotted the tournament from 2002 to 2015 after an incident in 2001. She was forced to withdraw from the semi-final match against her sister Serena due to a knee injury and ended up being heavily booed by the crowd while attending the finals.
Making her debut in 1994, Venus Williams won five Wimbledon titles and two US Open titles throughout her career. She made nine more Grand Slam finals appearances, the last of which came in 2017 at the Australian Open.

At the age of 20 years, Gauff has become the youngest China Open champion for the past 14 years. She also happens to be the second American champion in the China Open following Serena Williams who won in 2004 and 2013.
“I want to say congratulations to you, Karolina, it’s great to see you back on tour,” Gauff stated after her win, referring to Muchova’s extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a wrist injury at the 2023 US Open. “I would like to thank my team. It’s our first tournament together as a full, complete team,”
The China Open was Gauff’s first tournament after Matt Daly was added to her coaching team. She parted ways with Brad Gilbert in September. By winning the China Open, Gauff is boosting her chances of qualifying for the WTA Finals. She will need to be one of the eight top-ranked players on the WTA Rankings to qualify for the season-ending tournament.

]]>The U.S. tennis fans will have to wait a bit longer to see an American win the US Open after Taylor Fritz failed to overcome the world’s No. 1 Jannik Sinner on Sunday in the finals of the 2024 edition of the tournament.
Sinner, looking for his second Grand Slam title, entered the match as a prohibited favorite and didn’t take long to show why. While Fritz took a 3-2 lead in the first set, Sinner quickly made tactical adjustments to turn things in his favor. The Italian went on to win the next four games and take the first set.
While Fritz occasionally showed signs of life that fired up the crowd, he was making unforced errors and struggled to hit his first serve too often to make significant strides. Meanwhile, Sinner simply kept applying the pressure and didn’t give up any points on his first serve to take the remaining two sets (6-4, 7-5) and the title.
The US Open win marked Sinner’s second Grand Slam title of his career. He won his first this year as well, emerging victorious at the Australian Open. He became the first player since 1977 to win his first two Grand Slams in the same season.
Fritz, on the other hand, failed to make the most of his first appearance in Grand Slam finals. He was looking to become the first American to win a major title since Andy Roddick did it at the 2003 US Open.
“There’s obviously a lot of positives, and when I get some time to cool down then I’ll be happy about the fact that I made it to the finals,” Fritz said after the match. “But right now I’m pretty disappointed in just a lot of things on the court, how I played, how I hit certain shots.

]]>Aryna Sabalenka finally got her breakthrough at the US Open. After coming agonizingly close in the past three years, Sabalenka finally claimed victory at Flushing Meadows on Saturday with a straight sets (7-5, 7-5) win over hometown hero Jessica Pegula.
Pegula, appearing in her first Grand Slam finals, pushed Sabalenka to the limits in both sets but ultimately failed to find that something extra was needed to knock off the world’s No. 2 tennis player. This was particularly evident in the second set.
Pegula came back from 0-3 to claim a 5-4 lead and was serving to win the set and tie the match. But instead of grabbing the opportunity, the American allowed Sabalenka to get a break and change the momentum of the match that carried her to the win.
Sabalenka reached the US Open semis in 2021 and 2022 before getting to the finals last year, only to lose to Coco Gauff.
“I’m speechless right now,” Sabalenka said after the match. “So many times I thought I was so close … finally I get this beautiful trophy.”
The US Open title is the third Grand Slam win for Sabalenka after she won the Australian Open in 2023 and 2024. With this, she became only the fifth woman to win both the US Open and Australian Open in the same year since 1988.

Fritz needed four sets – 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3) – to oust the favored Zverev and make his first semi-finals at a Grand Slam tournament.
Fritz managed to beat Zverev thanks to a strong serve and a more aggressive approach, especially on the net. Zverev, on the other hand, didn’t have the full trust in his second serve, especially in the fourth set, and struggled with his forehand.
Fritz has been on a great run in 2024, playing the best season in his career. He has four wins against Top 10-ranked opponents already, including a win over Zverev at this year’s Wimbledon, after having none before this year. Now, he has the opportunity to take the next step while playing in front of the home crowd.
“I’ve had a lot of looks at quarterfinals over the last couple of years, and today just felt different,” Fritz said after the match. “I really felt like it was my time to take it a step further.”
Fritz made his first quarterfinals at a Grand Slam tournament at 2022 Wimbledon and made one at the US Open last year. He also reached the same stage at this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon.

]]>Emma Navarro once again proved to be an obstacle Coco Gauff couldn’t overcome at a Grand Slam tournament. After losing to Navarro in the fourth round at Wimbledon earlier this year, Gauff was once again eliminated by a fellow American at the 2024 US Open.
After an even start of the match, Navarro dialed up to take control of the first set and win it 6-3. Gauff, the defending champion, bounced back in the second set (4-6), but that didn’t mark the kind of comeback she hoped for. Navarro’s resilience, speed, power, and ability to extend points crushed Gauff in the third set (6-3) and ensured that there will be a new champion this year.
Gauff was undone by her serve, double-faulting 19 times, and her forehand. She also appeared less ready to respond to a challenging affair the match has turned out, looking exhausted at times. This might have something to do with her appearance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, although she previously found ways to get through demanding stretches.
For Gauff, the loss represents a disappointing end to an attempt to become the first woman to win back-to-back US Open titles in a row.
For Navarro, the win marks another step into her rapid ascension in the world of tennis. After previously failing to get past the second round of a Grand Slam, she has now done it in all four major tournaments in 2024. Additionally, it was the first time she got past the first round of the US Open in her career.
“It’s pretty insane. I lost in the first round the last two years, and now to be making the quarterfinals is pretty insane,” Navarro said after the match. “This is the city I was born in, and it feels so special to be playing here.”

“It was just an awful match for me,” Djokovic said after losing to the 28th seed. “I wasn’t playing even close to my best. It’s not good to be in that kind of state where you feel OK physically, and of course you’re motivated because it’s a Grand Slam, but you just are not able to find your game.”
Having recovered from a knee injury in June, this will be the first time since 2017 that Djokovic has ended a calendar year without winning a major title all season. It also happens to be the first year since 2002 where none of the Big Three, consisting of Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer, were able to win a Grand Slam trophy. Djokovic’s exit comes one day after rival Carlos Alcaraz suffered a shock elimination of his own, blowing the competition at Flushing Meadows wide open.

“I’m not thinking straight,” Alcaraz admitted after his defeat. “It was a fight against myself, in my mind, during the match. Today I was playing against the opponent, and I was playing against myself, in my mind. A lot of emotions that I couldn’t control.”
For Alcaraz, it was a bitter end to what had been a successful Grand Slam season for the 21-year-old player. While he lost in the quarter-final of the Australian Open, Alcaraz went on to win Roland Garros as well as Wimbledon, taking his career Grand Slam tally to four. Osaka won the women’s singles titles in 2018 and 2020, two of her four Grand Slam titles in total. After giving birth to her daughter, the Japanese player returned to tennis in January, having made it to the third round at least in four WTA 1000 tournaments since her return. Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, was sidelined for nine months as a result of a back injury. The Canadian reached the third round of this year’s Roland Garros, her first tournament appearance since returning from injury.
A three-time Grand Slam winner, Wawrinka won the men’s singles US Open competition in 2016. He will return for his 72nd main draw appearance at a Grand Slam competition. Another high-profile wild card in the men’s draw is Dominic Thiem, the winner of the 2020 edition of the tournament.

He made it to the final of the 2024 Paris Olympic tournament, clinching the silver medal after losing to Novak Djokovic in the final.

The Austrian is set to retire from tennis at the end of the calendar year due to a wrist injury.
