Ovechkin’s record-tying goal came in with 13:47 left in the third, courtesy of assists from John Carlson and Andrew Mangiapane, to give the Capitals a 4-3 lead.
Ovechkin was given an opportunity to break the record late in the third period after the Blackhawks decided to pull goalie Spencer Knight. However, he decided he didn’t want to enter the history books by placing a puck into an empty net.
“I tell Carbs [Capitols head coach Spencer Carbery] right away, ‘I don’t want to do it.’ Stromer [Dylan Strome] ask me, Carly [John Carlson] ask me, everybody ask me, ‘Do you want it? Do you want it?'” Ovechkin said after the game. “I said let’s wait … I don’t want an empty net.”
However, Ovechkin did break one record on the night. The game-winner against Chicago was the 136th such goal in his career, placing him at the top of the all-time list.
Ovechkin will have his next opportunity to take ownership of the NHL’s all-time scoring record when the Capitals face the New York Islanders.

]]>The Chicago Blackhawks’ struggles in recent seasons have prompted veteran All-Star defenseman Seth Jones to look for a way out.
Jones told reporters earlier this week that he is willing to waive his “no-movement” clause and would like to get traded to a contender and play “meaningful games.”
“I want to hope to maybe be in a situation where I’m competing for a Stanley Cup, at least playing some meaningful games in May and hopefully June. That’s where I am right now. Discussions with the agent and stuff like that have been going on. Obviously, there’s a lot of moving parts to something like this. But it is what it is, kind of, right now,” Jones said.
Jones, who has 26 points this season, added that he thinks the Blackhawks have been improving and have a bright future, but recognized that the team’s timeline isn’t aligned with his. He also recognized that his exit might take some time and said that he intends to remain professional and help the team as much as he can during the process.
Moving Jones couldn’t prove challenging for the Blackhawks due to his large contract. He signed an eight-year, $76 million contract extension with the franchise in 2021 and still has five years remaining after the 2024-25 season.
The Blackhawks acquired Seth Jones in a trade from the Columbus Blue Jackets in the summer of 2021. At the time, he was considered a missing piece that would help the team to return to playoffs after a disappointing campaign. However, the franchise soon decided to change course and instead embarked on a rebuild that is yet to yield meaningful results.
Jones entered the league as the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. He has 96 goals and 335 assists over the course of 835 NHL games, receiving five All-Star selections and the NHL Second All-Star Team honor in 2018.

The Hurricanes acquired Rantanen and Chicago Blackhawks’ left winger Taylor Hall in a blockbuster deal, which saw Colorado receive Carolina’s winger Martin Necas and center Jack Drury, along with a 2025 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-round pick. The Blackhawks also received a third-round pick in 2025 from The Hurricanes as a part of this three-way megadeal.
The Hurricanes are gearing up to hold preliminary extension talks with Rantanen, and they’re the only team eligible to give him an eight-year deal. It’s been reported he’s asking for an average annual value of around $14 million, which would mark a significant raise from his current salary of $9.25 million.
Mikko Rantanen made his NHL debut in 2015, after joining the Colorado Avalanche as the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2015 NHL draft. He helped the team win their first Stanley Cup in over two decades in 2022 and scored 64 points (25 goals, 39 assists) in 49 games this season, ranking sixth in the league.

]]>The Washington Capitals’ star center Alex Ovechkin returned to action on Saturday night after five weeks of absence and immediately resumed his chase for Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career scoring record.
Ovechkin scored in the Capitals’ 2-5 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs and now has 869 career goals in the NHL. This makes him just 26 goals shy of Gretzky, who scored 894 goals over the course of his time in the league.
Speaking with reporters on Saturday, Capitals’ head coach Spencer Carbery said the team was eager to welcome their best player back. Ovechkin went down back in mid-November after breaking his fibula against the Utah Hockey Club.
“The obvious thing [Ovechkin brings] is the goal scoring,” Carbery said. “But I even just think the threat of him being able to score, I think it lifts up our entire group. Him being in the lineup, his presence, his infectious personality, demeanor and him being on the ice … everybody in the building, along with our 19 other players, believe that he can score, and that lifts our entire group up.”
Despite turning 39 in September, Ovechkin was having an outstanding start of the season. In 18 games he played before the injury, he was the league leader with 15 goals while having a total of 25 points.
The Capitals went 10-5-1 without Ovechkin. They are currently sitting second in the Metropolitan Division with a 25-9-2 record.

The Rangers didn’t disclose the financial terms of the agreement, but sources close to the organization say Lafreniere will receive $52 million during the duration of the extension.
“I’m happy to be done with it and fired up to stay for seven years,” Lafreniere told reporters on Saturday. “It’s nice to get it done, and now I can just focus on the season and try to help the team win.”
The Rangers selected Alexis Lafreniere as the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft, and they had huge expectations for him. However, Lafreniere was solid but not even close to great in his first three seasons, prompting some fans and analysts to deem him a bust.
Lafreniere finally had his breakthrough last season, scoring 28 goals and adding 29 assists for a total of 57 points. He also had 16 points in the Stanley Cup playoffs, helping the team to the Eastern Conference finals.
Lafreniere carried over his good form to 2024-25 and has seven points (four goals and three assists) throughout the first seven games of the season.

Theodore, who is now tied to the Golden Knights organization through the 2031-2032 NHL campaign, will have a cap hit of $7.425 million when his new contract starts next season. He is earning $5.2 million in 2024-25.
Theodore made his NHL debut with the Anaheim Ducks in 2015-16 before being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights as part of the expansion draft deal between the two teams. Since then, he established himself as a key contributor to the team.
Since arriving in Vegas, Theodore recorded 67 goals and dished 296 points, making him the franchise leader in points among defensemen. He particularly made a big impact on the Golden Knights’ road to a Stanley Cup win in 2023. The Aldergrove, British Columbia native, had 13 points during that run, which made him the second highest-scoring defenseman of the 2023 postseason.
Theodore is off to a great start this season as well, leading the Golden Knights’ defensive unit with seven points (one goal and six assists) in six games. Vegas is currently 4-3-1, enough for second place in the Pacific Division.

The Panthers announced the news on Tuesday, saying that Maurice inked a “multiyear” extension.
Maurice became the head coach of the Panthers ahead of the 2022-23 campaign and led the franchise to the Stanley Cup Finals in each of his first two seasons in charge. The Panthers won it all in 2023-24, taking down the Edmonton Oilers in seven games.
Since taking over the Panthers, Maurice compiled a 102-61-16 record. This includes going 4-3-1 in the first seven games of the 2024-25 season. He is 29-16 in the playoffs, with his 29 postseason wins being a franchise record for a head coach.
“Paul has resolutely led our organization to unprecedented success during his relatively short tenure in South Florida,” Panthers’ general manager Bill Zito said in a statement. “He is a superb communicator and leader for our staff and players, possessing a keen strategic mind for the game. We are excited for Paul and his staff to continue to keep the Florida Panthers as a destination franchise for the foreseeable future.”
Prior to joining the Panthers, Paul Maurice coached the Carolina Hurricanes, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Winnipeg Jets. He has 873 wins in the NHL, ranking him fourth on the NHL’s all-time list.

Oettinger, who was in the final year of his old deal, received an eight-year contract that will pay him $66 million. He is now tied to the franchise through the 2032-33 NHL season.
“Real obvious he’s a core piece here and has been for a while,” Stars coach Peter DeBoer told reporters on Friday. “A great deal: a great deal for him, well-earned, and a great deal for the team. I think it’s going to look really good for both parties going forward.
For Oettinger, getting a deal done means he can now focus on playing hockey and be the best player he can.
“It’s everything you could ever want as a player: the organization making you a priority and wanting to get something done early is incredible,” said Oettinger. “Now I can just focus on my play and not have that in the back of my mind.”
Oettinger made 53 starts in the 2023-24 season, leading the Stars to a 35-14 record with a .905 save percentage and 2.72 goals-against average and earning his first All-Star nod. He was particularly great in the playoffs, with a .913 save percentage and 2.24 GGA.
Oettinger is off to a great start in 2024-25. Throughout three starts, he has a 3-0 record with a .948 save percentage, 1.63 GGA, and one shutout.

Crosby dished an assist in the first period to get his career points total to 1,600 points, making him only the 10th player in the history of the NHL to reach the mark.
Crosby needed 1,277 games to reach the milestone, making him the fifth fastest on the list. Also, he was the first player to cross the threshold of 1,600 points since Jaromir Jagr did it in 2011.
Crosby’s historic night didn’t end there. He would also go on to score an overtime goal to give the Penguins a win and lift them to a 3-2 record to start the season.
When asked about the milestone, Crosby opted to speak about the team and highlight his teammate Evgeni Malkin’s achievement. Malkin scored his 500th career goal against the Sabres, with Crosby being the one to deliver him the assist.
“I think whether it’s moments like tonight or things we’ve shared, good and bad, it’s been pretty incredible to be part of the team and play with him over this amount of time,” said Crosby. “I think we just care a lot about the team. We want to win. We expect a lot of each other. But I think there’s a lot of respect there too.”
Crosby signed a two-year, $17.4 million extension with the Penguins in the offseason and now has a contract that runs through the 2026-27 season. This almost makes it certain he’ll finish his career in Pittsburgh and add more milestones to his resume.

After being helped to his feet by teammates Evan Rodrigues and Uvis Balinskis, Barkov headed directly to his team’s locker room for further evaluation.
“He’s going to get looked at here tonight and probably tomorrow as well,” Panthers coach Paul Maurice stated. While there was no immediate word on the nature and severity of Barkov’s injury, it appeared that he was unable to put weight on his right leg upon rising to his feet and getting off the ice.
Winning one game from their first two matches, the Panthers are sitting fourth in the Eastern Conference standings. The Panthers are next set to face the Buffalo Sabres at the Keybank Center on Saturday night before traveling to Boston to play against the Bruins on Monday.
