Less than a week after completing a disastrous 2023-24 NHL season, the San Jose Sharks decided to part ways with their head coach David Quinn. The franchise made the move official on Wednesday.

Speaking about Quinn’s firing, Sharks’ general manager Mike Grier said that he felt a “new, different voice for the group” was needed.

“David is a good coach and an even better person. I would like to personally thank him for his hard work over these past two seasons,” said announcing the news. “He and his staff did an admirable job under some difficult circumstances, and I sincerely appreciate how they handled the situation.”

The Sharks finished the regular season with a 19-54-9 record, the worst in the league. Additionally, their 47 points are the second-fewest since the league introduced the salary cap era. But it wasn’t all Quinn’s doing, as he was coaching a rebuilding roster that lacked impactful players.

After missing the playoffs for three consecutive seasons under Bob Boughner, the Sharks hired Quinn in 2022 as his replacement while also starting to tear down their roster. During the process, they moved on from several veterans, including stars Timo Meier and Erik Karlsson, leaving Quinn with not much to work with.

Quinn leaves the Sharks after compiling a 41-98-25 record in his two seasons with the franchise.

The Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid added another major accomplishment to his already impressive resume. After assisting Zach Hyman for a goal in the second period of Tuesday’s win against the San Jose Sharks, McDavid reached the 100 assists mark in the 2023-24 season.

McDavid became just the fourth player in the history of the league to clear the mark in a single season. He now joins the list that includes Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Bobby Orr.

“It’s not something that you set out to do. It’s a product of playing with some really good players, playing on a good team, and putting in a lot of hard work,” said McDavid about reaching a century mark for assists.

McDavid has been less efficient with placing the puck into the net in 2023-24, scoring 32 goals, which is below the standard he set in recent seasons. However, that didn’t stop him from trying to impact the game in other games, which in part fueled his high assists output.

Interestingly enough, McDavid might not be the only player to hit the 100 assists mark this season. Nikita Kucherov has 99 assists in 2023-24, with his Tampa Bay Lightning having one more game to play.

The Arizona Coyotes are close to solving their arena problem, but the solution isn’t the one that hockey fans in Arizona will appreciate. According to multiple reports, the Coyotes are expected to relocate to Salt Lake City, Utah.

Since their lease with the city of Glendale for Desert Diamond Arena expired in 2022, the Coyotes have struggled to find a new home. Their attempt to build a new arena in Tempe fell through, and no viable option has been presented since. They were playing in Arizona State University’s 5,000-seat Mullett Arena this season.

The NHL reportedly stepped in and is working on facilitating the sale of Coyotes to Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith. The Coyotes would play in Delta Center, home of the Jazz, starting next season. The players were already notified about the relocation.

ESPN reports that the Coyotes’ current owner, Alex Meruelo, would be able to keep the Arizona Coyotes’ team name and intellectual property as part of the deal. He would get a chance to re-activate the franchise as an expansion team if he resolves the arena issue in the next five years. Starting an expansion team would reportedly come with a $1 billion fee for Meruelo, the same amount he’ll get from Smiths for the team.

The Florida Panthers’ winger Sam Reinhart had a lot of reasons to celebrate his two goals in a 1-4 win over the Philadelphia Flyers on Sunday. The Panthers not only snapped a four-game losing streak, but Reinhart also became the second player in franchise history to score 50 goals.

Reinhart has been having an outstanding 2023-24 campaign, reaching the 50-goal mark in 71 games while also adding 33 assists for a career-high 84 points. He never scored more than 33 goals since making his NHL debut in 2014-15.

“Very cool,” Reinhart said after the game. “It’s obviously a number I’ve never really thought about.”

The only other Panthers player to score 50 goals was Pavel Bure, who did it twice. Bure had 58 goals in 1999-00 and 59 goals in 2000-01.

“Such a rare thing in a player’s career,” Panthers’ head coach Paul Maurice said of Reinhart’s achievement. “That puts you in elite class. There are very few people’s names who score 50 that you don’t know. They’re superstars. We’re just so fortunate to have him.”

Sam Reinhart spent the first seven years of his career with the Buffalo Sabres before being traded to the Panthers ahead of the 2021–22 season. Reinhart, who earned his first All-Star nod in 2023-24, is currently in the final year of his three-year, $19.5 million contract.

The Washington Capitals superstar forward Alexander Ovechkin continues to write his name in the NHL history books. By scoring two goals in a 2-5 win over the Calgary Flames, Ovechkin became just the third player ever to have 19 consecutive seasons with at least 20 goals.

Ovechkin now has 21 goals in the 2023-24 NHL campaign and has added 31 assists for a total of 52 points in 64 games.

Besides Ovechkin, only Gordie Howe and Brendan Shanahan managed to have 19 straight 20-goal seasons. Howe actually had 22 seasons with at least 20 goals, from 1949-50 to 1970-71. However, Ovechkin is the only player in NHL history to start the streak in his first season in the league.

The two goals also got Ovechkin closer to Wayne Gretzky’s all-time scoring record. His goal tally in the NHL now stands at 843 goals, and he needs to score 52 more to jump over Gretzky.

“There’s not many things that hasn’t been said about him, but he keeps doing it, even at age 38. It’s fun to be a part of, fun to watch,” said Capitals’ Dylan Strome about Ovechkin.

Ovechkin himself focused on the importance of the win, their third straight, which moved the Capitals into a wild-card spot.

“We know it’s not going to be easy. We keep fighting, keep playing,” said Ovechkin. “We still can do it. We’re still in the battle. Every point counts.”

Forward Wayne Simmonds announced his retirement from the NHL on Monday. Simmonds will sign a one-day contract with the Philadelphia Flyers so he can retire as a member of the franchise with which he played for eight seasons.

Simmonds hasn’t signed with the team in 2023-24 and said back in January that he won’t be playing professional hockey again. He will ink his one-day contract with the Flyers on April 13 and will receive a ceremony in his honor at the halftime of the game against the New Jersey Devils.

“It’s hard to describe my emotions on a day like this, but one of my very first thoughts as I look back is my life in Philadelphia and playing for the Flyers,” Simmonds said via ESPN. “Taking the ice in a Flyers sweater is a special feeling, and it’s one that I’m truly proud of. The history of this franchise and standard of being a Flyer that was set is unique and one that I hold in the highest regard.”

Wayne Simmonds made his NHL debut with the Los Angeles Kings in 2008–09. After three years with the franchise, he was traded to the Flyers. As a member of the Flyers, Simmonds played 584 games in the NHL while scoring 203 goals and dishing 175 assists for a total of 378 points. He received his first and only All-Star nod in 2017 while playing in Philadelphia.

The Flyers traded Simmonds to the Nashville Predators midway through the 2018-19 campaign. He later went on to suit up for the New Jersey Devils, Buffalo Sabres, and Toronto Maple Leafs. Simmonds will finish his NHL career with 526 points in 1,037 games.

A huge trade took place just before the NHL trade deadline wrapped up on Friday. The San Jose Sharks traded their start forward Tomas Hertl to the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a first-round pick in 2025 and forward David Edstrom.

As part of the trade, the Sharks are also sending two third-rounders (2025, 2027) to Vegas and will retain 17% of Hertl’s salary. Hertl signed an eight-year, $65.1 million contract with San Jose ahead of the 2022-23 NHL season.

Hertl is currently out after undergoing knee surgery in February. However, Vegas most likely made the trade with the postseason in mind, when the two-time All-Star is expected to become available.

After the trade became official, Hertl went on social media to show his excitement about joining his new team.

Before going down with the injury, Tomas Hertl was playing well and had 15 goals and 19 assists for a total of 34 points in 48 games. Hertl spent all of his 10+ seasons in the NHL with the Sharks and left the franchise having played 712 games and contributed 484 points.

The Vegas Golden Knights have been quite busy at the trade deadline as they attempt to make a run for another Stanley Cup. Prior to Hertl, they also acquired veteran winger Anthony Mantha from the Washington Capitals.

The Philadelphia Flyers finally found a team that was willing to give up a first-rounder for defenseman Sean Walker. The Flyers traded Walker to the Colorado Avalanche, receiving a first-round selection in 2025 in exchange.

In order to extract the first-round pick, the Flyers had to become creative. They are sending a 2025 fifth-rounder to Colorado while also taking on forward Ryan Johansen’s contract.

Walker has been highly sought-after as the trade deadline approached. He offers physical presence on defense while also enjoying one of his most productive campaigns on the other end. Walker has six goals and 16 assists for 22 points after 63 games and is on pace to beat his season high of 24 points from 2019-20.

The Flyers are hoping to remain in contention for a playoff spot, but it is easy to see why they decided to move on from Walker. He is on an expiring contract, and it was unlikely he would be open to remaining in Philly after this season. Also, the Flyers are still in the rebuild mentality and need all the assets they can get.

Shortly after the trade was finalized, the Flyers waived Johansen. If he’s not picked up, they will be on the hook for 50% of his $8 million salary in 2023-24 and next season.

Reigning Stanley Cup champions the Vegas Golden Knights added more depth to their roster as they prepare to embark on another deep playoff run. They acquired veteran forward Anthony Mantha in a trade with the Washington Capitals, confirming the move on Tuesday.

According to the announcement, Vegas gave up a second-round pick in 2024 and a 2026 fourth-rounder to get Mantha.

The Athletic reports that the deal between Vegas and Capitals will see Washington retaining 50% of Mantha’s salary. Mantha is set to earn $5.7 million in 2023-24. This is significant for the Golden Knights as they will be able to make more additions before the trade deadline wraps up.

Golden Knights have been on the market for an offensive-minded addition since losing captain Mark Stone to a season-ending injury. Stone suffered a lacerated spleen in February and has been placed on a long-term injured reserve.

Mantha made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2015–16 season. He spent five and a half years with the franchise before being traded to the Capitals midway through the 2020-21 campaign. This season, Mantha has 20 goals and 14 assists for a total of 34 points in 56 games.

Vegas Golden Knights are currently sitting third in the Pacific Division with a 33-22-7 record and 73 points. They are currently holding onto a wild-card spot but have Nashville Predators and LA Kings breathing down their neck.

The Dallas Stars realize they have an opportunity to go all the way in the 2023-24 season. That is a major reason why the Stars pulled off a trade with the Calgary Flames that saw them landing veteran defenseman Chris Tanev.

The trade will see the Stars sending prospect Artem Grushnikov, a 2024 second-round pick, a conditional third-round selection in 2026 to Calgary for Tanev. As part of the transaction, the Flames will retain 50% of Tanev’s salary and cap hit, while the other 50% will fall onto the New Jersey Devils, who received a 2026 fourth-round pick from Dallas in exchange.

Tanev appeared in 56 games this season, contributing with one goal and 13 assists for a total of 14 points. He is currently in the final year of his four-year, $18 million contract.

The move provides a big boost for the Stars’ blue line, which was a major point of concern in an otherwise outstanding campaign. Tanev has been a reliable defenseman throughout his career and is known as a great locker-room presence. He is expected to be tasked with a significant role, especially considering the questionable status of injured Nils Lundkvis and Jani Hakanpaa still not being fully fit after recovering from an injury of his own.

The Stars have shown this season that their run to the Conference Finals last year wasn’t an accident. They are currently sitting second in the Central Division with 79 points, the same as the leading Winnipeg Jets.
