In the final round, McIlroy appeared to be headed to another heartbreak. He had a lead of three shots from the third round before seeing it melt away after he shot a 73, one over par. Meanwhile, Justin Rose managed to make up significant ground and tie him after finishing the round with 66, six under par.
Rose missed a birdie putt on the first playoff hole, while McIlroy made his to cap off an emotional win.
The win at the 2025 Masters was McIlroy’s fifth major championship and first since 2014. It also made him just the sixth player in the Modern Era to complete a Grand Slam, having previously won the U.S. Open in 2011, PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014, and The Open Championship in 2014.
“This is my 17th time here, and I started to wonder if it would ever be my time,” McIlroy said after the tournament. “I think the last 10 years coming here with the burden of the Grand Slam on my shoulders and trying to achieve that, yeah, I’m sort of wondering what we’re all going to talk about going into next year’s Masters.”

Woods is hosting his annual Hero World Challenge tournament in the Bahamas this week but won’t be one of the golfers competing at the event. According to Woods, he feels that he hasn’t recovered enough to compete against the best.
“I’m still not there. And these are 20 of the best players in the world, and I’m not sharp enough to compete against them at this level,” Woods told reporters. “When I’m ready to compete and play at this level, then I will.”
Woods added that he still feels the desire to compete and pursue his 16th major championship. However, he is taking a cautious approach to his recovery and wants to avoid any potential setbacks.
“I don’t want to have any setbacks. Just want to keep making progress and give myself the best chance going to next year as possible,” he added. “I feel like I’m getting stronger, I’m getting more pliable, but I got a long way to go to be able to compete against these guys.”
Woods’ most recent tournament appearance came at The Open in July, where he missed the cut.

]]>15-time major champion Tiger Woods announced on Friday that he underwent a successful lower back surgery. This is the sixth time Woods had a procedure on his lower back since 2010.
According to Woods, who shared the news on social media, the surgery went “smoothly” and is expected to “help alleviate the back spasms and pain” he has been dealing with throughout the 2024 golf season.
“I look forward to tackling this rehab and preparing myself to get back to normal life activities, including golf,” Woods added.
It is unclear how much time Woods will spend recovering from the procedure. He is currently scheduled to play at the Hero World Challenge and the PNC Championship tournaments in December.
The injuries have limited Woods to only five tournament appearances, including four majors, this year, and he hasn’t played professionally since July and The Open. Prior to that, he played just three tournaments in 2022 and 2023 combined.
After withdrawing at The Genesis Invitational, his first tournament in 2024, Woods finished 60th at The Masters with 16-over 304, which marked his all-time worst outing at the tournament. However, he set a new record with 24 consecutive cuts made.
Woods would go on to miss the cuts at the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and The Open.

According to Golfweek’s Eamon Lynch, the match featuring four of the biggest golf stars will take place in December in Las Vegas and will be broadcast on TNT. Further details remain under wraps.
McIlroy and representatives for Scheffler, Dechambeau, and Koepka later confirmed the news in statements provided to Golfweek.
“I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December,” said McIlroy. “This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans. We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”
The event promises an exciting affair, considering the intriguing backstories that will follow it. Besides pitting two golf tours against each other, it will also bring another duel between McIlroy and DeChambeau. The two had a tightly contested clash at this year’s U.S. Open, with DeChambeau getting a narrow win and McIlroy missing his best opportunity to end a decade-long drought without a major win.
It remains to be seen whether the clash of Scheffler and McIlroy versus DeChambeau and Koepka will be part of The Match. Produced by TNT since 2018, it is a series of exhibition matches between the biggest names in golf. McIlroy, DeChambeau, and Koepka all previously took part in The Match at some point.

McIlroy, who won the tournament back in 2011, was in good shape to be the one to repeat in 2024, ending the first round five under par. It presented a perfect opportunity for McIlroy to end his decade-long drought without a major title.
By the time the third round ended, DeChambeau climbed to first place with seven under par lead while McIlroy sat tied at second with four under par alongside Patrick Cantlay and Matthieu Pavon.
McIlroy took the lead in the final round again with eight under entering the four final holes. However, several unexpected mistakes, including missing a two-foot par putt on 16 and a three-foot par putt on 18, ended up erasing his lead.
DeChambeau, on the other hand, pulled off a master shot from 55 yards on the final hole to get out of a bunker and had a successful putt to finish one stroke ahead of McIlroy.
“When I turned the corner and saw I was a couple back, I said, ‘Nope, I’m not going to let that happen. I have to focus on figuring out how to make this happen,'” DeChambeau later said. “I was a little lucky. Rory didn’t make a couple of putts that he could have coming in.”

Scheffler, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 golfer in the world, entered the final round with −7 to par and one-shot lead ahead of Collin Morikawa. He would go on to finish the round with −11 to par, being up four strokes on second-placed Ludvig Åberg.
Scheffler now has two Masters titles from five appearances. He is also the fourth-youngest two-time winner in the history of the tournament at the age of 27, behind only Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and Steve Ballesteros.
“I feel like I’m playing really good golf right now,” Scheffler said after receiving the iconic green jacket. “I feel like I’m in control of my emotions as I’ve ever been, which is a good place to be. I feel like I’m maturing as a person on the golf course, which is a good place to be.”

Woods has now made the cut at the Masters for 24 consecutive times, more than any other player in the Masters history. He was previously tied with Fred Couples and Gary Player with 23 straight cuts made.
When asked about the record, Woods didn’t waste too much time celebrating. Instead, he remained focused on the task at hand.
“It means I have a chance going into the weekend,” Woods said. “I’m here. I have a chance to win the golf tournament. I don’t know if they’re all going to finish today, but I’m done. I got my two rounds in. Just need some food and some caffeine, and I’ll be good to go.”

Kim will make his LIV debut at the LIV Golf Invitational Jeddah on Friday and play out the rest of the season as a wild-card player.
Kim underwent Achilles tendon surgery in 2012 and was initially projected to miss between eight and 12 months. However, his recovery took longer than expected, and he remained away from golf, saying on multiple occasions that he wasn’t “ready” to play again. Reportedly, one of the reasons he was reluctant to come back was an insurance policy that would see him collect between $10 and $20 million in case of a career-ending injury.
Kim became a professional in 2006 and has three PGA Tour wins and a Kiwi Challenge win on his resume. His best results in major championships were third place at the Masters in 2010 and fifth place at The Open Championship in 2011. He was at one point ranked at No.6 on World Rankings.
“After stepping away from the game years ago due to injury, I’m happy to officially announce my return to the world of professional golf,” Kim said in a statement after his comeback was made official. “It’s been a long time coming, and I’m very grateful for all the highs, lows and lessons learned from the first part of my career. I want to compete with the best players in the world, and I’m on a mission to prove to myself that I can win again.”

]]>The three most prominent golf tours—the PGA Tour, the LIV Golf, and the DP World Tour—made an announcement on Tuesday that they are merging in a move that sent shockwaves throughout the world of golf.
Announcing the merger, PGA Tour called it a “landmark agreement to unify men’s professional golf”.
The PGA Tour and the DP World Tour were previously engaged in a widely publicized legal battle with LIV Golf after the Saudi Arabia-backed tour plucked away some of the best golf players with lucrative contracts. The merger will now bring to an end all the legal proceedings and allow LIV Golf members to become part of the PGA Tour and DP World Tour again.
According to PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan, the decision was made with the goal to improve golf as a sport and take it to another level.
“There’s been a lot of tension in our sport over the last couple of years,” Monahan said in a chat with CNBC. “What we’re talking about today is coming together to unify the game of golf and to do so under one umbrella.”
The details of the merger are still being worked out, but the tours said it will result in a “new, collectively owned, for-profit entity to ensure that all stakeholders benefit from a model that delivers maximum excitement and competition among the game’s best players.”
