The big showdown between two rival golf tours is in the making. PGA Tour stars Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy are set to face Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka of LIV Golf at a made-for-TV event later this year.
According to Golfweek’s Eamon Lynch, the match featuring four of the biggest golf stars will take place in December in Las Vegas and will be broadcast on TNT. Further details remain under wraps.
McIlroy and representatives for Scheffler, Dechambeau, and Koepka later confirmed the news in statements provided to Golfweek.
“I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December,” said McIlroy. “This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energize the fans. We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.”
The event promises an exciting affair, considering the intriguing backstories that will follow it. Besides pitting two golf tours against each other, it will also bring another duel between McIlroy and DeChambeau. The two had a tightly contested clash at this year’s U.S. Open, with DeChambeau getting a narrow win and McIlroy missing his best opportunity to end a decade-long drought without a major win.
It remains to be seen whether the clash of Scheffler and McIlroy versus DeChambeau and Koepka will be part of The Match. Produced by TNT since 2018, it is a series of exhibition matches between the biggest names in golf. McIlroy, DeChambeau, and Koepka all previously took part in The Match at some point.
