The switch is expected to take place before the Japanese Grand Prix, Tsunoda’s home race, which is scheduled to take place at the end of next week. Tsunoda will become the running mate of current world champion Max Verstappen while Lawson will take a seat with Racing Bulls alongside Isack Hadjar.
Tsunoda was in the mix to begin the season as a Red Bull driver, but the team opted for Lawson. They believed that the New Zealand driver had a higher ceiling despite his limited F1 experience. However, this decision backfired spectacularly.
Lawson qualified at No.18 at the Australian GP before crashing and failing to finish the race. He then came last in sprint and qualifiers for the Chinese GP, finishing the race at No.16. Meanwhile, Verstappen finished second and fourth, respectively, despite driving the same car.
Tsunoda made his F1 debut in 2021. His best performance came in 2024 when he was 12th at the end of the season. He failed to finish in points in the first two races of the 2025 season but was impressive at the Chinese GP sprint, finishing 6th.

]]>The Formula One circuit has come to a halt for this year, but there is still a lot happening behind the scenes. Mercedes announced the return of Valtteri Bottas as a reserve driver, while Red Bull tapped Liam Lawson to replace the departing Sergio Perez.
Bottas raced for Mercedes between 2017 and 2021, finishing second on the Driver Standings on two occasions and amassing 10 wins and 58 podium finishes. He spent the past three seasons with Alfa Romeo/Sauber.
“Returning home to the Mercedes family as third driver for 2025 is what’s next, and I couldn’t be more pleased,” Bottas said in a statement. “I want to thank Toto (Wolff), the team at Brackley, and everyone at the three-pointed star for welcoming me back with open arms.“
Lawson, on the other hand, gets a full-time shot at Formula One after making sporadical appearances on the grid in the past two seasons. He has 11 F1 races and six points on his resume.
“It’s been an incredible journey so far,” Lawson said. “I want to say a massive thank you to the whole team at RB for their support, the last six races have played a huge part in my preparation for this next step.”
Bottas finished the 2024 season without winning a single point, which ultimately led to him being out of a F1 seat. Reserve driver role with Mercedes allows him to remain in form while waiting another opportunity.
In Lawson, Red Bull gets a promising young talent that they believe can become a world-class driver. The team previously parted ways with Perez one year before his contract was set to expire due to his disappointing 2024 campaign.

]]>Despite Red Bull preaching patience with their struggling driver, Sergio Perez, the team decided to go in a different direction for 2025.
According to multiple reports, Perez is expected to leave Red Bull at the end of the 2024 Formula One season. The team made the decision following Perez’s lackluster performance at the Qatar Grand Prix over the weekend. He finished 20th in the sprint and started the race from No. 9 before spinning out to the gravel in Lap 40.
Perez signed a new contract extension with Red Bull through the 2026 F1 season back in the summer. At the time, the 34-year-old driver was coming off his best year, finishing second in Driver Standings behind teammate Max Verstappen.
However, Perez’s form has taken a dramatic dip in 2024. He made the podium just four times and is sitting eighth in Driver Standings with just one race left in the season. His poor performances also caused Red Bull to lose its Constructors title, sitting third in the standings behind McLaren and Ferrari.
Considering that Perez still has two years on the contract, Red Bull can’t release him. However, they can assign him another role, or the driver can choose to quit himself.
“He’s not enjoying the situation he’s in at the moment,” said Red Bull’s CEO when asked about Perez. “… I think he’s old enough and wise enough to come to his own conclusions but there is still a race to go so let’s get to the end of Abu Dhabi and see where we are at.”
If Red Bull actually replaces Perez, they have several options to turn to, including RB’s Liam Lawson and junior driver Isack Hadjar, who is currently competing in Formula 2.
Perez, on the other hand, might have limited options, considering almost all places on the grid for the 2025 F1 season are locked in.

]]>The Formula One grid is getting expanded. The world’s most popular racing competition confirmed that American automotive giant General Motors (GM) and its iconic brand Cadillac will join as its 11th team for the 2026 F1 season.
F1 has been unreceptive to expansion in recent years due to pressure from the teams, which didn’t want their prize money to be diluted. This led to a bid by motorsports organization Andretti Global, helmed by Michael Andretti, son of former F1 champion Mario Andretti, to be recently rejected.
However, F1 proved to be much more open to the involvement of GM. The circuit is enjoying a rapid growth in popularity across the United States, and having a reputable team from the country would further boost the F1 brand.
“General Motors and Cadillac’s commitment to this project is an important and positive demonstration of the evolution of our sport. We look forward to seeing the progress and growth of this application, certain of the full collaboration and support of all the parties involved,” Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, said in a statement.
General Motors will initially use an engine developed by one of the existing manufacturers approved by the F1. However, the team has committed to developing its own power unit, likely in 2028.

]]>McLaren’s Lando Norris admitted on Thursday that his challenge for the Formula One title is likely over following a disappointing performance at the Brazilian Grand Prix earlier this month.
Norris finished the Brazilian GP at No. 8, picking up only eight points, while his rival and reigning champion Max Verstappen got the win and picked up 25 points to further increase his lead at the Drivers Standings.
“I kind of know the position I’m in now, and probably I have less to lose now,” Norris said. “You know, the gap to Max is … for the first time, probably when I’ve looked at the gap myself and had the realization of where things stand, and I think post-Brazil was a tough one for me because it was the first moment realistically when I’m like, it’s tough to achieve first position now.
Verstappen now has 393 points, 62 more than Norris, with three races left in the season. Prior to the Brazilian GP, the gap was 47 points. Red Bull’s driver now only needs to finish ahead of Norris in one of those races to clinch his fourth straight F1 championship.
“We were on such a good run of form, little by little, you know, it’s hard to get any big points on Max because he didn’t have any bad races, but I had a tough week because things just didn’t go our way, and my kind of real fight for the championship was slimmed by the biggest margin of almost of the whole year, “Norris added.
Verstappen will have a chance to secure the title on Saturday at the Las Vegas Grand Prix.

]]>The 2024 United States Grand Prix offered a bit of everything for racing fans. There were daring overtakes, constant battles, controversial decisions, and a surprising winner in Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Leclerc started the race at No. 4, but managed to emerge as the race leader by the time the drivers exited the first turn at Circuit of the Americas. Lecler first had a quick charge off the line to overtake his teammate Carlos Sainz and then used the clash between championship contenders McLaren’s Lando Norris and Red Bull’s Max Verstappen in front of him to grab the first position.
Leclerc held firmly to the position until Lap 26 when he pitted and exited behind Norris and another McLaren driver Oscar Piastir. Once the McLarens pitted, Leclerc got up front once again and controlled the race until the end.
“I knew that Max and Lando would be very aggressive towards each other,” Leclerc said after the race. “I mean, they are fighting for the championship. “
Meanwhile, Sainz, who was third after the first lap, overcame an issue with his power unit and eventually managed to overtake Verstappen for second position, one he managed to hold on to. This gave Ferrari a 1-2 finish.
Despite not being in a position to fight for the win, Norris and Verstappen still treated the US F1 fans with an exciting battle that culminated four laps before the end of the race. After several attacks, Norris managed to overtake Verstappen for third position but went beyond track limits to do so.
Norris believed that Verstappen forced him to make that move and decided not to give back the position. The officials ended up handing him a 5-second penalty, which pushed him back to fourth place.
After United States GP, Verstappen increased his lead over Norris at the top of the Drivers Standings. The Red Bull driver has a 57 points advantage with five races left in the season.

After winning the pole position on Saturday, Norris sustained early pressure from Verstappen, starting at P2, and proceeded to lead the race for all of its 62 laps. He finished with a 20.9-second advantage over Verstappen, who finished second. Norris’ McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri was third.
“It was an amazing race,” Norris said. “A few too many close calls – I had a couple of little moments in the middle, but it was well controlled I think, otherwise … The car was mega, I could push and we were flying the whole race. It was a nice race. Still tough, I’m a bit out of breath, but very fun one.”
After the Singapore GP win, Norris now trails Verstappen by 52 points with six races left in the 2024 F1 season. He could have made it 51 points, but his bid for the fastest lap ended up futile, thanks to Daniel Ricciardo.
Norris had the fastest lap in the bag before Ricciardo, racing for RB, the sister team of Verstappen’s Red Bull, pitted for fresh tires before the last lap. Ricciardo proceeded to take the fastest lap away from Norris in a move many seen as an attempt to help Verstappen in the championship race.
On Team Standings, McLaren has an even bigger advantage over Red Bull. McLaren is at the top with 516 points compared to Red Bull’s 475. Ferrari rounds up the Top 3 with 441 points.

]]>Daniel Ricciardo’s future in Formula One is up in the air, and the RB’s driver is well aware of this. However, Ricciardo expects that his status for 2025, as well as the remainder of this season, becomes clearer following the upcoming Singapore GP.
Ricciardo is believed to be facing long odds to maintain his seat with RB (former AlphaTauri) for the next season, considering that highly touted reserve driver Liam Lawson is expected to receive a full-time promotion to the grid next year. There are also speculations that Lawson could even replace Ricciardo as soon as this season due to the Australian’s poor performances.
“Basically, I do expect a yes or a no for ’25, and then yeah, I’m aware of some talk and speculation about the rest of the season,” Ricciardo said after being asked about his future with RB. “But that, for me at the moment, I’m unaware of. The decision I expect is for next year. Obviously, crazy things have happened in this sport. I’m also not going to stand here too boastful and confident and, ‘Oh, yeah, yeah!’”
Daniel Ricciardo started driving for RB towards the end of the 2023 season, stepping in for released Nyck de Vries for the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix and beyond. He previously served as Red Bull’s reserve driver after McLaren elected not to renew his contract following the end of the 2022 campaign.
Ricciardo managed to win only six points in eight races last year, but it proved enough for him to keep his seat at least for one more year. However, 2024 didn’t prove any better, as he has 12 points from 17 races and is currently sitting 14th on F1 Drivers’ Rankings.

]]>McLaren’s Lando Norris needs all the help he can get if he is going to seriously challenge Red Bull’s Max Verstappen for Formula One title this season. And as far as McLaren is concerned, he will get it.
In a recent interview with BBC, McLaren’s team principal, Andrea Stella, said that the constructor would back Norris over his teammate Oscar Piastri for the remainder of the 2024 campaign. This means that Norris will get a more favorable strategy for races and that Piastri will be asked to sacrifice his own performance in favor of Norris.
“We [will] bias our support to Lando, but we want to do it without too much compromise on our principles,” said Stella. “Our principles are that the team interest always comes first. Sportsmanship for us is important in the overall way we go racing. And then we want to be fair to both drivers.”
Until now, McLaren has been committed to allowing Norris and Piastri to race without too much input. However, recent events at the Italian Grand Prix prompted the team to change its approach.
Norris got pole position in Monza, and Piastri started the race at P2. But the start of the race saw Piastri overtaking Norris, disrupting the team’s strategy and helping Ferari’s Charles Leclerc emerge victorious.
Norris is a safer bet for McLaren, considering he is 62 points behind leader Verstappen on the F1 Drivers’ rankings. Piastri, on the other hand, is fourth in the standings and trails Verstappen by 106 points.

]]>Logan Sargeant’s 2024 Formula One season came to an unceremonious end. The American racing driver has been removed from the grid by Williams Racing and replaced by Franco Colapinto.
The move doesn’t come as a surprise, considering Sargeant’s poor performances this season. He competed in 15 races and failed to win a single point. It also didn’t help that Sargeant crashed at the Netherlands Grand Prix qualifiers over the weekend, with his car catching on fire.
Announcing the move, Williams’ boss, James Vowles, said in a statement that the decision was prompted by the team’s wish to maximize their opportunities to score points. During his time in F1, Sargeant only has one point to his name.
“To replace a driver midseason is not a decision we have taken lightly, but we believe this gives Williams the best chance to compete for points over the remainder of the season,” Williams’ boss James Vowles said in a statement. “We have just brought a large upgrade to the car and need to maximize every points-scoring opportunity in a remarkably tight midfield battle.”
It remains to be seen whether Colapinto manages to get more points to Williams. The 21-year-old Argentinean has been competing in Formula 2 this season and was fifth in the standings, with one win out of 16 races, before being called up for F1.
