While the odds were stacked firmly against her, Canadian 15th seed Bianca Andreescu shocked the crowd at Flushing Meadows by defeating former number one Serena Williams to win the US Open.

Clearly the favorite going into the final, Williams played outstanding tennis en route to the final, dropping just one set before her showdown with Andreescu. This included sweeping aside Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-1 in the first round, and defeating 5th seed Svitolina 6-3 6-1 in the semi finals.

Upon meeting the Canadian underdog in the final, luck seemed to finally run out for the former US Open champion. Having conceded a surprising eight double faults, Williams allowed Andreescu the opportunity to take the first set 6-3. As a result of her unwavering focus, Andreescu managed to contain Williams in the second set until the scoreline was 5-5, at which point the Canadian broke Williams’ momentum to take the set 7-5, resulting in her winning the match as well as the championship.

While relatively new to the WTA circuit, the 19-year-old has proven her ability to date, winning 38 of her 42 matches so far in 2019. Currently ranked 15th in the WTA world rankings, Andreescu has enjoyed her fair share of silverware this season, with wins in both Toronto and Indian Wells prior to her maiden Grand Slam triumph.
