The New York Yankees’ All-Star catcher Jose Trevino will need wrist surgery that will rule him out for the remainder of the season. The player confirmed the news himself in a chat with reporters on Friday.

Trevino said that he has been dealing with torn ligaments in his right wrist since spring training. He played through the pain so far in the season, but the issue apparently became too serious to ignore.

“I couldn’t really take it anymore,” Trevino said. “Not really bringing anything to the table. I feel like it’s the best move.”

The Yankees placed Trevino on Injured List on Friday with a “right wrist tear” designation. The team recalled Ben Rortvedt from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move.

Jose Trevino joined the Yankees in a trade from the Texas Rangers ahead of the 2022 campaign. He finished last season batting .248 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs, earning his first career All-Star nod. He also received Platinum Glove Award as the best defensive player in American League.

Trevino failed to replicate his performances in 2023, having a career-low batting average of .210 with four homers and 15 RBIs so far in the campaign.
