Jannik Sinner ranked No. 1 on the ATP list, ended his run at 2024 Wimbledon in the quarterfinals after a surprising 6-7, 6-4, 7-6, 2-6, 6-3 loss to Daniil Medvedev.
Considering his great run in 2024, which included an Australian Open win and the semifinals at the French Open, Sinner was considered one of the favorites to win this year’s Wimbledon. However, a grueling match against Medvedev proved to be too much for the Italian.
Sinner’s body started to give up on him in the third set, and he needed a 10-minute break in the locker room. While he went on to lose the set, he bounced back to take the fourth and set up a thrilling finish.
However, it turned out that Sinner only had that much left in him, as Medvedev took the fifth with ease to make it to his second straight semifinals at All England Club.
This was a satisfactory win for Medvedev, considering that he lost to Sinner in five sets in the Finals of the 2024 Australian Open.
“Mentally it was a good match today because I actually didn’t think about the match in Australia (which he lost in five sets),” said Medvedev after the match. “I was not thinking before the fifth set, ‘oh, my God, it’s again five sets.’”
Medvedev will now face the reigning Wimbledon champion, Carlos Alcaraz, in the semifinals.
