Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers has confirmed the signing of Matheus Nunes from Sporting Lisbon. The midfielder cost a price tag of £42.2 million—a club record transfer fee.

The Wolves are expected to pay an initial fee of £38 million, plus an additional £4.2 million in add-ons. The 23-year-old player is the club’s third summer signing, following forward Goncalo Guedes from Valencia and defender Nathan Collins from Burnley.

Prior to his arrival at the Molineux Stadium, Nunes has enjoyed a strong start to the new season, scoring in Sporting Lisbon’s 3-0 victory over Rio Ave on Saturday in the club’s second game in the Primeira Liga.

Nunes made 76 appearances for Sporting, scoring seven goals in the process. The midfielder also made his debut for the Portugal national team last year and has played eight games and scored one goal on the international stage since.

West Ham United manager David Moyes also expressed an interest in signing Nunes, however, the player was reportedly unwilling to play for the Hammers, favoring a transfer to Bruno Lage’s Wolves side.
