The Wolverhampton Wanderers have reached an agreement for the transfer of Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid, sources confirmed on Wednesday. The Brazilian forward will arrive at Wolves for a fee of €40 million plus variables.

The 23-year-old player joined Atletico in 2021 from Hertha Berlin, however, a lack of regular playing time has resulted in the Brazilian seeking a move elsewhere. Due to significant squad depth, Atletico manager Diego Simeone has an array of forwards to choose from, including the likes of regulars Alvaro Morata, Joao Felix, and Antoine Griezmann.

Additional variables of up to €15 million could accompany the deal, with Atletico receiving €10 million while Hertha receives the remaining €5 million.

With seven goals in 54 appearances for Atletico, Cunha’s lack of game time resulted in his missing out on a spot in the squad that Brazil took to the 2022 World Cup.

Currently, the Wolves sit at the foot of the Premier League table with 10 points from their first 15 games. Under new manager Julen Lopetegui, they will be hoping to pick up their form, while Cunha will be relied on to bolster their struggling attack.
