The New York Giants will have someone else in charge of their defense in 2024. According to ESPN’s JordanRaanan, Wink Martindale has resigned as the Giants’ coordinator on Monday.

Martindale, who has one year left on his contract, is reportedly leaving in part due to his strained relationship with head coach Brian Daboll.

Martindale’s resignation isn’t coming as a big surprise. It didn’t seem that Martindale and Daboll were on the same page at various points during the 2023 season, clashing on several instances, sometimes even publicly. Their opposing personalities, with Martindale looking for a calm approach and Daboll being more reactive, also didn’t help.

Prior to the report of Martindale leaving, the Giants made several coaching moves, including firing outside linebackers coach Drew Wilkins and defensive assistant Kevin Wilkins. The Wilkins brothers came with Martindale from the Baltimore Ravens and were considered his good friends and top assistants.

Wink Martindale joined the Giants in 2022 after previously spending four years as a defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens. He also had stops with the Oakland Raiders and the Denver Broncos. In 2023, Martindale was the recipient of the Paul “Dr. Z” Zimmerman Award, which serves as a lifetime achievement award for an NFL assistant coach.
