Wilt Chamberlain’s game-worn Los Angeles Lakers jersey from the 1972 NBA Finals will soon be offered at an upcoming online auction organized by Sothesby’s. The auction house estimates that the jersey will sell for more than $4 million.
According to the listing, Chamberlain wore the same jersey in three games during the playoff run that resulted in the Lakers winning an NBA title over the New York Knicks. This included Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals, Game 2 of the NBA Finals, and the title-clinching Game 5, in which Chamberlain had 24 points, 29 rebounds, nine assists, and seven blocks despite playing with a broken hand.
The 1972 NBA Finals saw Chamberlain win his second NBA title and first NBA Finals MVP honors. It was also the first championship for the Lakers since relocating to Los Angeles in 1960.
“This jersey holds an extraordinarily significant place in the history of Los Angeles, not only adorned by the man many consider to be the greatest player ever to step on the court but as a relic from one of the greatest franchises in sports history,” said Brahm Wachter, head of streetwear and modern collectibles at Sotheby’s, in a statement.
The jersey will be displayed for the public in Sothesby’s gallery in Los Angeles through August. The bidding will start on August 28 and is set to conclude on September 27.
