On a chaotic final matchday which saw teams’ fortunes change in the blink of an eye, West Bromwich Albion are the big winners as they have gained automatic promotion to the Premier League.

After Leeds United locked up the Championship trophy and their promotion slot, the race was on between Brentford and West Brom for the other automatic promotion spot, given to the second-place finisher in the league.

While they went into the night with a slim one-point advantage in the standings, many thought that Brentford would easily win against newly-relegated Barnsley and slip into an automatic promotion slot.

However, the Bees shockingly lost at home to the bottom of the table side whereas West Brom’s 2-2 draw against Queens Park Rangers ended up being more than enough to guarantee their ticket to the Premier League.

West Brom’s stay in the Championship after being relegated in 2018 lasted only two seasons, with the Baggies quickly rebuilding and returning to the top tier of English soccer.

Now, only one promotion slot is up for grabs for the 2020-21 season. Brentford and Swansea City will face off in one of the promotion playoff semi-finals, while Fulham and Cardiff City will go head-to-head in the other.

The winner of the promotion playoffs with join Leeds United and West Brom in the upcoming edition of one of the top leagues in the world.
