Washington Redskins will enter the 2020 NFL season with a new name and logo. The news was announced on Monday in an official statement posted on social media.
Earlier this month, the organization said that they will undergo a “thorough review” of their name and their logo as they are perceived offensive. The franchise has been using the name Redskins since 1933 when they were located in Boston.
“Dan Snyder and Coach [Ron] Rivera are working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition-rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans, and community for the next 100 years,” said the team in a statement.
Despite the changes, sources say that Washington intends to keep using the burgundy and gold colors. Also, the team’s head coach Ron Rivera previously hinted that the new name might be connected with the military.
The Washington Redskins were founded in 1932 as Boston Braves. The team changed its nickname to Redskins a year later and was known as the Boston Redskins until 1936. In 1937 the team relocated to Washington D.C. and adopted its soon-to-be changed name and logo.
Since its foundation, the franchise won two NFL Championships and three Super Bowls. Their last Super Bowl win came in 1991.
