Liverpool’s star center-back Virgil van Dijk is unsure about his future with the Premier League giants and the Netherlands’s national team. Van Dijk shared how he feels while talking with reporters after a disappointing elimination with the Netherlands in the EURO 2024 semifinals.
According to van Dijk, he will take the summer to think about what he wants from his future. He is the captain of both Liverpool and the Netherlands.
“I haven’t the slightest idea right now. I will think carefully this summer about what I want at the club level and as an international player. Then we’ll go for it again, but first recover from this,” Van Dijk said. “After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”
While van Dijk is likely disappointed for coming short with the Netherlands at this year’s European Championship, it is hard to see him pass on the opportunity to captain the team once again at the World Cup 2026. But his future with Liverpool is a lot murkier as he has only one year left on his contract, and the club recently moved on from longtime manager Jurgen Klopp.
Virgil van Dijk was almost ever-present for Liverpool this past season, starting 36 out of 38 games in the Premier League in 2023-24. He also played all six games for the Netherlands at EURO 2024.
