Villarreal CF, fresh on a fifth-place finish in La Liga and qualification for the 2020-21 edition of the UEFA Europa League, has announced former Arsenal boss Unai Emery as its new manager.

Villarreal, which decided to part ways with former manager Javi Calleja despite their strong 2019-20 season, will bring arguably the biggest-name coach to have ever sat on the bench at the Estadio de la Ceramica, signing him to a three-year contract.

Emery joined Arsenal in May 2018 after a two-season stretch as the head coach at Paris Saint Germain. He had previously held jobs as the head coach at Valencia CF and Sevilla, both of which are in his native Spain.

The Basque Country native led Arsenal to a fifth-place finish in 2018-19 and reached the Europa League final, but was sacked early last season after a disappointing start to the season for the Gunners.

Emery is an expert in the Europa League, having won three straight editions of the tournament during his successful run with Sevilla.

At Villarreal, Emery has the opportunity to return to his native country and will now look to lead yet another team to a season filled with Europa League success.
