The San Antonio Spurs’ second-year phenom Victor Wembanyama has finally got out of his scoring slump and did it in a spectacular way. Wembanyama scored a career-high 50 points as he helped his team get a 139-130 win over the Washington Wizards.
At 20 years and 314 days, Wembanyama is now the fourth youngest player in NBA history to score 50 or more points. Only Brandon Jennings, LeBron James, and Devin Booker were younger when they reached the 50-point mark.
Even more impressive, Wembanyama’s 50th point came with 8:52 left on the clock in the fourth quarter. He hasn’t scored a single basket from that point on.
“My first thought is eventually I want the rest of our performances, the rest of our games, to overshadow this one,” Wembanyama said after the game. “I want to make it where in the future, [this is] just another one.”
After a spectacular rookie season, Wembanyama has had a slower start to the 2024-25 campaign than expected. The performance against the Wizards lifted his points average to 22.2 points per game, but his rebounding (10.2) and assists (2.7) still remain below last season’s averages of 10.6 points and 3.9 assists, respectively.
The Spurs are currently 10th in the Western Conference with a 6-6 record. Lately, the team has played without head coach Gregg Popovich, who is dealing with a medical condition.
