Veteran safety Tre Boston returned to the place where his NFL career started. Carolina Panthers confirmed on Thursday that they have signed Boston, bringing him in on a one-year deal. The contract is reportedly worth $3 million.

Boston spent 2019 with Arizona Cardinals and had a productive season in which he totaled 79 tackles, nine pass deflections, three interceptions, and a forced fumble. Before deciding on Carolina, the 27-year-old visited several other teams including New York Giants.

“You’ve got to have a guy who’s productive back there,” – said Panthers’ head coach Ron Rivera. “He’s been tremendously productive. He’s been available, and we’ve been looking at him. We have a group of young guys who’ve been fine back there, but we feel now is a good opportunity to bring in a guy that can help us. It’s part of what we’re trying to build together as far as the pass rush and coverage and all that.”

Carolina Panthers’ drafted Tre Boston in the fourth round of 2014 NFL Draft, and he ended up spending his first three years as a pro with the organization. Panthers decided to waive Boston prior to the start of 2017, and he ended up taking one-year deals with Los Angeles Chargers and Cardinals.

After a solid year with Arizona, Boston hoped he will manage to get a long-term deal somewhere. Although that didn’t happen with Panthers, he is sure he made the right choice.

“For me, it’s all about honing in and having fun again. Kind of have to let that go,” – said Boston. “Coming back here was easy for me. I wanted to find a good contract. I fit in this system. It’s all about being on the right page with what I’m worth and what these guys are asking of me.”

Boston’s NFL career stats include 266 tackles, 2.0 sacks, 27 pass deflections, 10 interceptions and one defensive touchdown.
