Veteran quarterback Colt McCoy announced his retirement from the NFL via a post on social media and a YouTube video shared on the Underdog Originals channel.
McCoy’s decision comes after he spent the 2023 season without a team. His most recent action in the NFL came in 2022 when he played in four games, including three starts, with the Arizona Cardinals.
After retirement, McCoy will transition to broadcasting and serve as a college football analyst with NBC. He will work on Big Ten games and is expected to make his debut for the Colorado-Nebraska matchup in early September.
“College football has always held a special place in my heart. With the expansion of the Big Ten and a new era of college football, it is the perfect time to join NBC Sports,” McCoy stated. “I can’t wait to share in the passion, excitement, and competitive spirit every week.”
McCoy spent five years playing college football with the Texas Longhorns and became a school legend. He was a Heisman Trophy finalist two times, broke a number of records, and led the school to the BCS National Championship. Longhorns later retired his No. 12 jersey.
Despite success with the Longhorns, McCoy fell to the third round of the 2010 NFL Draft, where he was taken by the Cleveland Browns. He started 21 games in his first two seasons with the franchise but failed to replicate his collegiate success in the pros.
McCoy was demoted to backup in his third season with the Browns and left the franchise after the 2012 campaign. He would go on to have the same role with the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Commanders, New York Giants, and the Cardinals.
