It was widely speculated that Brazilian veteran full-back Filipe Luis is poised for a move to MLS or China after his contract with Atletico Madrid expired this summer. Luis, however, decided to snub both options and opted to sign with Flamengo.

Flamengo announced that they have signed Luis to a two-year deal on Tuesday, confirming the move on their social media.

Following Atletico’s decision to let Filipe Luis walk away after the end of the season, the 33-year-old sparked interest from several European clubs including France powerhouse PSG. In recent weeks, Major League Soccer clubs joined the pursuit and tried to persuade him to come to the United States, while he reportedly also had offers from several clubs from China. Still, Luis was more drawn to the idea of returning to his homeland and play for the club he supported as a child.

“Feeling that goes from father to son, from grandfather to grandchild. The heart beats,” – said Luis after inking the deal. “The big day has come, the day to fulfill my childhood dream. The day I can say I’m a player of my Mengao.”

Luis made a name for himself with Atletico Madrid, where he played eight years in two separate stints. During his time in Spain, he won six trophies with the club including La Liga title in 2013. He also spent time with Ajax and Chelsea.
