The Golden State Warriors have signed veteran forward Rudy Gay to a one-year deal. The news was confirmed to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski by Gay’s agent Sam Permut.

According to Wojnarowski, the deal doesn’t guarantee Gay a spot on the 15-man roster, and the 37-year-old player will have to earn it in training camp.

The Warriors have been focused on getting experienced players on their roster this offseason as they try to maximize their championship window with their core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green. The team traded 2019’s first-round pick Jordan Poole for All-Star point guard Chris Paul while signing veterans Cory Joseph and Dario Saric in free agency.

While Gay is in the twilight of his career and isn’t expected to be a huge contributor, adding another experienced player to boost their bench depth makes sense for the Warriors. He can also provide mentorship for their young forward Jonathan Kuminga.

Gay is entering his 18th season in the NBA and previously played for the Memphis Grizzlies, the Toronto Raptors, the Sacramento Kings, the San Antonio Spurs, and the Utah Jazz. He has career averages of 15.8 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game.

Ben loves sports so much but prefers watching other people do it. He prefers not to share what teams he's supporting but he is willing to admit that Lebron James is, in fact, the king.
