England international Eric Dier committed to Tottenham Hotspur until the summer of 2024. The news was confirmed by the London club on Tuesday.

Dier’s previous contract with Tottenham was set to expire next year. Previous reports suggested that the 26-year-old could be on the move after that, but two sides managed to come up to an agreement in recent weeks. It is believed that the team’s head coach Jose Mourinho had a lot to do with that, as he was vocal about wanting to keep the versatile defender on his squad.

Tottenham confirmed the news on social media.

“I am really happy to continue here and commit to this new journey we’re on,” Dier told Spurs TV. “It’s crazy to think that I have been here for six years now. I have enjoyed it a lot. It’s a fantastic place to be.”

Since arriving at the club from Sporting CP in 2014, Dier made 239 appearances in all competitions while helping the team to No.2 in Premier League in 2014/15 and UEFA Champions League Finals appearance last season.

“We’ve had some great times together, but I want to have even better times, and I still feel there are a lot of things I need to achieve here before it’s over,” he added.

Tottenham was aggressive about locking Dier to a deal a year early due to their previous mistakes in that department. The club failed to re-sign midfielder Christian Eriksen and had to be content with a small fee after selling him to Inter in January. They are also set to lose defender Jan Vertonghen on free this summer.
