It is the end of an era. Legendary striker Alex Morgan won’t be part of the at the upcoming 2024 Paris Olympics. This will be the first major tournament Morgan won’t play with USWNT since her first-team debut in 2010.
New USWNT head coach Emma Hayes picked 18 players to bring to Paris, with a mix of veteran players and emerging stars.
Morgan played a prominent role at the last three Olympics, helping USWNT win a gold medal in London and a bronze in Tokyo. No active player has more than 224 appearances and 123 goals for the national side.
After receiving the heartbreaking news, Morgan shared a statement on X (former Twitter) in which she said she is “disappointed” with the decision.
“In less than a month, I look forward to supporting this team and cheering them on alongside the rest of our country,” Morgan added.
The United States women’s national team is looking to bounce back at the Olympics following a string of poor performances at major tournaments for their standard. After two consecutive World Cup wins, the USWNT only made it to the Round of 16 in 2023. Additionally, they only have a bronze medal to show for the past two Olympics after winning three consecutive gold medals.
