United States men’s national team midfielder Gio Reyna will have to postpone his return to action. According to the player’s club, Bundesliga powerhouse Borussia Dortmund, Reyna will be out until November due to a setback in groin injury recovery.

Reyna got hurt back in September during training while being on international duty with the USMNT. The initial prognosis was that he’d be out for a few weeks, but now he is looking for a two-month stint on the sidelines.

Borussia’s head coach, Nuri Sahin, confirmed Reyna’s setback while discussing forwards Julien Duranville and Karim Adeyemi. According to Sahin, all three players are expected to be back with the team following November’s international break.

“We expect that Juju and Karim will be available again after the international break in November. Unfortunately, Gio had a setback and it looks similar for him,” Sahin said.

After a loan stint with Nottingham Forest in 2023-24, Gio Reyna was hoping he would be able to recoup his past form this season and once again be an important player for Borussia. However, things are currently not looking well, as Reyna only made a cameo appearance in the opener of the 2024-25 Bundesliga season and spent the following game on the bench.

With the latest injury, Reyna’s chances of breaking into Borussia’s starting 11 have further shrunk, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he left for another loan in January.
