The U.S. international midfielder Tanner Tessmann is a new member of Ligue 1 side Lyon. The French club acquired Tessmann in a €6 million ($6.7 million) transfer from Seria A side Venezia.
According to Lyon’s official statement, Tessmann signed a five-year contract. As part of the transfer, Venezia will receive 10% of the profit from any future transfer.
Tessmann played his early career with FC Dallas in MLS before securing a transfer to Venezia in 2021. He quickly established himself as the key player for the Italian club and has been attracting interest from major clubs for a while. This was particularly the case following the 2023-24 campaign, in which he played 42 games and contributed with seven goals and three assists.
Reportedly, several clubs were seriously considering pursuing Tessmann this summer, including Premier League’s Brighton and Ipswich Town as well as Venezia’s Seria A rival Fiorentina. However, the American favored a move to Lyon as he believed it offered him a better chance to get regular playing time.
Tessmann’s great performances also brought him a call-up to the United States men’s national team (USMNT). He has made two appearances for the senior team so far while also being part of the United State’s Olympics squad in Paris.
