US midfielder Weston McKennie suffered a foot injury and had to be carried off the field in Schalke’s Saturday 2-0 loss to leaders Bayern Munich on Saturday.
Mckennie was injured on the second half of the Bundesliga match as his team FC Schalke battled league leaders Bayern Munich in Gelsenkirchen. The 20-year-old won the ball against Bayern’s James Rodriguez in the 51st minute. But as the Colombian tried to win the ball back, he hit the American on the shin, causing an injury that stopped the match momentarily.
McKennie was carried off the field and his team won a dangerous free kick. Schalke squandered the opportunity, which could have put them 1-1 level with Bayern. A few minutes later, Robert Lewandowski scored his first of the day to win the match for the Munich-based team.
Last week, McKennie missed Schalke’s game against Borussia Monchengladbach due to an issue with the same foot. The 20-year-old had also bruised his knee earlier in the month in the US’ 1-0 win over Mexico in a friendly match.
With Saturday’s injury, the midfielder is set to miss Schalke’s next two games. McKennie will also likely miss the USMNT friendly against Peru next month.
