U.S. international forward Duncan McGuire might have to wait a bit longer before taking his talents to Europe. Tom Bogert of The Athletic reports that McGuire’s proposed transfer from Orlando City to English Championship side Blackburn Rovers fell through at the last moment.
Reportedly, McGuire was set to join Blackburn in a deal worth around $4 million. The 22-year-old player was on a plane to undergo his medical and sign a contract when Blackburn informed Orlando City that they were pulling out of the agreement due to “financial reasons”.
According to soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, there is a chance that McGuire still ends up in England before the winter transfer window closes in Europe. Orlando is currently engaged in talks with Sheffield Wednesday, who have previously shown interest in the player.
Duncan McGuire had an outstanding debut season in MLS in 2023, scoring 13 goals and adding three assists in 29 matches. He also added two goals in three Leagues Cup appearances. McGuire’s promising performances made him a target for clubs from Europe, who looked to take advantage of Orlando’s low asking price.
McGuire also earned himself a call-up to the United States men’s national team. He played 28 minutes in a 0-1 friendly loss to Slovenia in January and is expected to be part of the squad that plays at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
