Borussia Dortmund’s midfielder Giovanni Reyna is expected to miss a “few weeks” after suffering a groin injury while on international duty with the United States men’s national team.
The news about Reyna’s injury was confirmed by Borussia’s head coach, Nuri Sahin, during a press conference on Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, Giovanni Reyna will be out because he was injured playing for the national team,” Sahin said. “I found him extremely sad. Unfortunately, it will take a few weeks, then I hope that he can continue on a good path after that.”
This marks another setback for Reyna in his attempts to return to form and regain his place in Borussia’s starting lineup.
After playing just 271 minutes in 11 Bundesliga games in the first part of the 2023-24 season, Reyna spent the second part of the campaign on loan with Premier League side Nottingham Forest. However, he made just two starts with Nottingham and played 10 games overall in all competitions.
Reyna was expected to leave Dortmund during the transfer window, but his proposed move to Bochum was nixed in part because Sahin believed he could help the American bounce back after several rough seasons. But making cameo appearances so far in 2024-25 and now being out for several weeks, the chances of that happening are even slimmer.
