United States international and Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie will most likely miss the remainder of 2018/19 Bundesliga season following an ankle injury he suffered in USMNT’s 1-0 friendly victory over Ecuador on Thursday.
McKennie saw a specialist in Houston over the weekend and on Monday the U.S. Soccer described his injury as “moderate to high degree left ankle sprain” and was expected to “miss several weeks.” However, according to ESPN, the 20-year-old might miss up to eight weeks recovering.
“I think with these injuries you take it week by week in terms of it being an ankle injury and the severity,” – said USMNT manager Gregg Berhalter. “We’re confident that [McKennie is] going to recover in a good way.
“I think it’s an ankle sprain. There’s some ligament damage, and you wait for the ligaments to heal. You start doing your rehab now; he can start biking, doing pool running now, and he can get there. He’ll recover.” – he added.
Weston McKennie enjoyed another solid season with Schalke as he started to enjoy more confidence from team’s manager Huub Stevens. McKennie played 19 games in Bundesliga, in which he contributed with one goal and four assists, while also adding one goal in six matches in Champions League.
