The Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagvailoa has made history by securing the most lucrative contract extension in franchise history, his agency confirmed to ESPN. Tagovailoa’s $212.4 million contract extension will see him remain with the Dolphins for another four years.

As a result of the $53.1 million average annual value of his contract, Tagovailoa was briefly set to become the third highest-paid quarterback in the NFL before Green Bay Packers closed a deal with Jordan Love just hours later. Tagovailoa’s contract comes with $167 million guaranteed.

Tagovailoa reached the peak of his career in 2023, leading the NFL with 4,624 passing yards and a personal-best 29 touchdown passes while making the third most total passing yards in franchise history. He also became the first Dolphins quarterback to lead the NFL in passing yards since 1992.

Since Dan Marino retired prior to the 2000 season, the Dolphins constantly struggled to nail a solid quarterback prior to Tagovailoa’s arrival. 25 quarterbacks have started for the Dolphins, with Tagovailoa finally emerging as the candidate who appears set to take the team forward.
