Tottenham Hotspur found their new manager after a lengthy search that started back in March with the firing of Antonio Conte. And it is not a high-profile name that you might expect from a club of Tottenham’s stature.

The London club opted for an unconventional route by hiring Celtic’s manager Ange Postecoglou. The Australian will take over in July after inking a four-year deal.

Initially, Tottenham was linked with a number of big names, including Julian Nagelsmann, Luis Enrique, and their former boss Mauricio Pochettino. The club then seemed close to hiring Feyenoord’s Arne Slot, but the Dutchman surprisingly snubbed them in favor of a new deal with the Eredivisie side.

After missing out on their preferred targets, the Spurs turned to Postecoglo, being impressed with the job he has done in Scotland. Postecoglou coached the Celtic for the past two seasons and won five out of six available domestic trophies, including two Scottish Premiership titles.

“Ange brings a positive mentality and a fast, attacking style of play,” said Spurs’ chairman Daniel Levy in a statement. “He has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy — everything that is important to our club. We are excited to have Ange join us as we prepare for the season ahead.”

While unknown to casual soccer fans, Ange Postecoglou has a rich managerial career that dates back to 1996. He previously managed a number of Australian clubs, led Australia’s national team at the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and Yokohama F. Marinos before taking over Celtic.
