Tottenham announced on Tuesday that they have finalized the signing of Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Southampton. Hojbjerg reportedly joined his new club for a transfer fee of around $19.5 million.

Hojbjerg had one year left on his deal with Southampton, and he previously told the club that he doesn’t want to resign as he looks to play for a high-profile club. Several other Premier League clubs, including Everton, were battling for his signature in the past weeks but the 25-year-old player ended up choosing the London club.

“I’m very proud, very happy, I’m also very excited to be here – I just want to get going, meet everyone and play football,” said Hojbjerg after inking the deal. “I think it was very clear to me that Spurs is a very big club but also a club with even more potential to reach the ultimate, and I wanted so much to be a part of that. I think there is a fantastic future ahead for the club and hopefully for me as well.”

Tottenham is expecting that Hojbjerg will give stability to their midfield as the team looks to fight for the Champions League spot next season. He will probably be used in the same manner as his fellow Denmark native Christian Eriksen, who left for Inter Milan in January.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg started his professional career with Bayern Munich, but spent most of his five years with the Bundesliga giants on loans. He joined Southampton in 2016 in a deal worth around $15 million. Since then, Hojbjerg played 134 games in all competitions with the club and was even a captain in recent years.

Hojbjerg plays for Denmark on an international level since 2014 and has since made 33 appearances for the senior team.
