According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Toronto Raptors agreed to a four-year, $42 million contract extension with guard Norman Powell. The $42 million was the max Raptors could give to Powell, who impressed in his sophomore season. With this extension, Powell is now set to become a core piece in the franchise’s future.

I’m ready for it,” Powell said. “It’s what I’ve worked for. It’s what I’ve fought for my first two years. . . I’ve worked, I’ve pushed myself in a totally different way this offseason. I’m preparing myself for a full 82-game season, for increased minutes, taking care of my body, just training and trying to improve. So I’m ready for it. I’m excited to get the season started.

Norman Powell played college basketball at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) where he spent 4 seasons. He was one of the team’s most consistent performer and thought about entering the NBA draft following his junior year. After he was informed that he may not be drafted at all, Powell decided to return to UCLA for his senior year. At season’s end, Powell was voted first-team All-Pac-12, and again received honorable mention for the All-Defensive Team. He also finished as team’s leader in scoring with 16.4 points per game. Powell entered the 2015 NBA draft and was taken by the Milwaukee Bucks with the 46th overall pick. The Bucks later traded Powell alongside 2017 first round pick to the Raptors in exchange for Greivis Vásquez. After a solid rookie season, Powell emerged as an important bench piece for the Raptors in his second season. He was particularly great in the playoffs, where he averaged 11.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.1 steals per game. With DeMarre Carroll being shipped to the Brooklyn Nets, Powell will certainly move up to the starting line-up in the upcoming season and hopefully justify his contract.
