The era of Lou Lamoriello as the Toronto Maple Leafs general manager has come to an end after three years. The Maple Leafs have made an announcement on Tuesday, saying that they will not bring back the 75-year-old Hall of Famer for the next NHL season. The team will, however, keep Lamoriello as the organization’s senior advisor.

Three years ago, Lou and I agreed on a contract that would see him serve as General Manager of the Maple Leafs for three years and then transition to Senior Advisor for the following four years,” – said team president Brendan Shanahan. “This morning I informed Lou that I was not going to deviate from that course of action. I will now focus all of my attention towards making a decision regarding our next general manager.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Lou for his tireless work over the last three years as general manager. His leadership in helping establish a cultural foundation, as well as his invaluable mentorship to everyone in this organization, has been instrumental in our development.” – Shanahan added.

Lou Lamoriello served as GM with the New Jersey Devils from 1987 to 2015, winning the Stanley Cup three times and earning the induction into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2009. He joined the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2015 and managed to transform a team that finished the second-last in the Atlantic Division into a potential Stanley Cup contender in three years. In 2017-18 NHL season, Maple Leafs set a franchise record for standings points with 105 and managed to win 49 games, improving their record by 20 wins in two seasons. This is something Lamoriello is especially proud of.

Seeing how the franchise has grown as far as winning,” – said Lamoriello when asked about his biggest point of pride during the time with Maple Leafs. “Seeing the team go from 30th (place in the NHL standings) to 14th/15th to seventh, that would be the proudest moment.
