Toronto FC will have to start the 2020 MLS season without one of their most important players. Toronto’s captain Michael Bradley underwent ankle surgery recently and is projected to be out for a significant period of time.

Bradley suffered the injury during the 2019 MLS Cup Final loss to Seattle Sounders in October after a duel with Seattle’s Roman Torres. The 32-year-old midfielder opted not to undergo surgery immediately, hoping that he would be able to rehab it. That, unfortunately, didn’t happen, and the procedure emerged as the most viable option once again.

According to Toronto’s general manager Ali Curtis, Bradley will be out for four months.

“It will take probably approximately four months,” Curtis told reporters. “Now, that could be shorter or could be lengthier, depending upon how we manage that process. Of course, we would love for him to be ready to go today, but that’s not going to happen.”

Michael Bradley played 27 games in MLS last season, contributing with three goals and three assists en route to Toronto claiming fourth seed in Western Conference. He also helped the team reach their third MLS Cup Final since he joined the organization in 2014.

Bradley is a three-time MLS All-Star and two-time CONCACAF Men’s Best XI honoree. He won the MLS Cup trophy once and has three Canadian Championship titles with Toronto.
