The members of the United States men’s national team are still not sure who will be their new head coach despite the reports about ex-Tottenham and Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino being set to take the job.
Speaking at the press conference on Tuesday, the longtime USMNT defender said he and his teammates don’t know much about the status of the search for Gregg Berhalter’s successor.
“We know as much as everybody else,” Ream shared. “We were updated a few weeks ago that the search was moving in a positive direction and at this point that’s where everybody is at. “
According to Ream, USMNT players have been told that they will be notified “when something happens,”
“So we are updated, but we have not been told anything is final up to this point,” he added.
It was widely reported back in August that Pochettino accepted the offer from the U.S. Soccer Federation and will become the new USMNT head coach. However, the news was never made official, and there haven’t been many updates since then.
Reportedly, the process was dragged out due to the fact that Pochettino is still negotiating the terms of his exit from Chelsea after the London club fired him.
In the meantime, USMNT is being coached by Mikey Varas on an interim basis. Varas is expected to lead the team through the September international window when the U.S. is set to face Canada and New Zealand in friendly matches.
