Brazilian defender Thiago Silva is reportedly set to leave Ligue 1 powerhouse Paris Saint-Germain this summer. According to French media outlets L’Équipe and RMC, Silva was recently informed by the club that he wouldn’t be offered an extension and can leave once PSG finishes their UEFA Champions League campaign.

Silva’s contract was supposed to expire in June, but due to the coronavirus, the 35-year-old defender’s stay was prolonged for another two months. He already played his last Ligue 1 game, however, as the league previously decided to cancel the rest of the 2019/20 season and awarded the title to PSG.

Reportedly, the biggest reason why Silva, who serves as the team captain, won’t get a contract extension is his big wages. The club is facing a big financial loss this year and is looking to cut its wage budget after years of heavy spending. Other big earners that could follow Silva include Julian Draxler, Edinson Cavani, and Leandro Paredes.

Thiago Silva came to Paris in 2012, joining the club in a record $50 million transfer from Seria A side Milan. During his eight seasons in the French capital, Silva played 310 games and won more than 20 trophies, including seven Ligue 1 titles.

Several clubs are mentioned as Silva’s next destination, but he is reportedly closest to returning to his native country, Brazil, and signing with his boyhood club Fluminense.
