The Houston Texans, fresh off of their second consecutive AFC South division title with quarterback DeShaun Watson at the helm of the team, surprising no one when they picked up their fifth-year option on the quarterback for the 2021 season.

Watson, who has made the Pro Bowl in each of the past two seasons, has burst onto the scene as one of the league’s top young quarterbacks since being drafted 12th overall in the 2017 Draft.

The Clemson alum took over as the team’s starting quarterback halfway through the 2017 season and impressed, throwing for 19 touchdowns and only 8 interceptions.

He continued to build on that momentum in the 2018 and 2019 seasons, having cemented his position as the team’s starter at the quarterback position.

Watson led Bill O’Brien’s team to the playoffs as division champions in each of the past two seasons, frustrating defenses with his passing ability and aptitude for scrambling out of the pocket.

Over his three seasons with the team, Watson has thrown for 9,716 yards, 71 touchdowns, and only 26 inteceptions.

The team now knows that it will have Watson under contract for each of the next two seasons, although Houston’s ultimate goal is to keep the quarterback with the team on a long-term deal.
