The schedule for the first round of qualifying for the 2023 Basketball World Cup has been released, following the official draw at the FIBA headquarters in Mies, Switzerland. Team USA is due to face Puerto Rico, Mexico, and Cuba in their group.
The qualification tournament will see the introduction of the new face of Team USA, with Grant Hill appearing as managing director for USA Basketball. Hill’s, predecessor, Jerry Colangelo, oversaw Team USA’s last four Olympics tournaments, during which the USA was able to clinch the gold medal on each occasion.
While the USA has enjoyed an uninterrupted run of championship wins at the Olympic Games, the team is desperately looking to redeem itself from its disappointing seventh-place finish at the last world cup, during which Spain emerged as victors.
Spain’s world cup qualifying draw includes games against the likes of Ukraine, Georgia, and North Macedonia in Group G of the European qualifiers.
