Team Europe Edge Out Team World to Lift Laver Cup

After an action-packed weekend in Geneva, Switzerland, Team Europe defeated Team World by a scoreline of 13-11 to win the 2019 edition of the Laver Cup. Named after Australian legend Rod Laver, this tournament has been coined the Ryder Cup of tennis.

Team Europe stormed to a 3-1 lead on the first day of the competition, after victories from Tsitsipas and Thiem in the singles’ matches while Federer and Zverev came out on top in the doubles.

The second day of the competition saw Team Europe take a 7-5 lead, as both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal won their single’s events, however, a doubles win by Kyrgios and Sock as well as a single’s victory for Isner saw Team World take the lead with a score of 8-7. With yet another win by Taylor Fritz, Team World extended their lead to 11-7.

Team Europe would not take this loss lying down, however, as both Zverev and Federer won their singles matches while to bring the final scoreline to 13-11.

While Team World was coached by John McEnroe, it was Bjorn Borg coached Team Europe to victory. “I’m very proud of my team,” said Borg. “I’m a very happy captain.” Team Europe has won all three editions of the tournament.
