The Tampa Bay Rays have found a new home for the 2025 MLB season after their Tropicana Field was damaged by Hurricane Milton last month. The Rays announced they will play their home games next season at George M. Steinbrenner Field, which serves as the spring training field for the New York Yankees.
George M. Steinbrenner Field has been the primary home of Yankee’s affiliate Class A affiliate Tampa Tarpons and can seat 11,000 fans. It is situated in northwest Tampa and in close proximity to Raymond James Stadium, home of the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Rays considered a number of different options for their temporary home in the Tampa metropolitan area but believed that George M. Steinbrenner Field was best suited for MLB baseball.
“It is singularly the best opportunity for our fans to experience 81 games of major league Rays baseball,” Rays owner Stuart Sternberg said in a statement. “As difficult as it is to get any of these stadiums up to major league standards, it was the least difficult. You’re going to see Major League Baseball in a small environment.”
Tropicana Field will require significant restoration efforts to be ready to host baseball games again. The cost of repair is expected to come to $55.7 million.
