Veteran Taj Gibson is ending his third stint under Tom Thibodeau. According to multiple reports, Gibson was waived by the Knicks earlier this week and now intends to sign with the Washington Wizards.

The Knicks’ decision to waive Gibson is somewhat surprising considering his strong relationship with Thibodeau. The two previously worked together with the Chicago Bulls and the Minnesota Timberwolves as well, and Thibodeau appreciated his veteran leadership.

On the other hand, it seems like the Wizards didn’t think twice when they got an opportunity to sign Gibson. The 37-year-old player adds depth to their frontcourt, brings defensive and rebounding, and should be a great locker room presence for the franchise.

The Wizards have been active this offseason in attempting to build a team that can make some noise in the playoffs in 2022-23. Besides re-signing their franchise star Bradley Beal to a massive contract, Washington also snapped Delon Wright in free agency and added guard Monte Morris and forward Will Barton in a trade with the Denver Nuggets.

Taj Gibson has spent 13 seasons in the NBA so far, averaging 9.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 1.0 blocks per game with four different franchises. He averaged 4.4 points and 4.4 boards in 52 games for the Knicks last season.
