MLS side Colorado Rapids is reportedly in talks with Manchester City about the acquisition of U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen. According to a report by The Athletic’s Tom Bogert, the negotiations between the two teams have been “complicated” but “progressing”.

Steffen is under contract with the Premier League side through the 2024-25 season. He is currently sidelined with a knee injury that required him to get surgery back in the summer.

Getting Steffen would be a big coup for Colorado Rapids. Despite his inability to get regular playing time with City, the 28-year-old would immediately become one of the best goalies in the MLS. The Rapids are in need of reliable goalkeeping, considering they conceded 54 goals in the 2023 regular season, one of the major reasons why they finished at the bottom of the Western Conference.

Zack Steffen played four seasons in MLS with Columbus Crew SC before securing a $7 million transfer to Manchester City in 2019. During his time with the club, Steffen made 21 appearances while also being sent out on season-long loans with Fortuna Dusseldorf and Middlesbrough.

Steffen previously served as the No.1 goalie for the United States men’s national team but recently lost his spot. He played only three international games in 2022 and wasn’t part of the roster that went to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

After serving two seasons as a backup for Ederson at Manchester City, USMNT’s Zack Steffen will have a chance to be the first-choice goalkeeper again. Multiple reports say that City is sending Steffen on loan to English Championship, where he’ll play for Middlesbrough.

According to influential soccer insider Fabrizio Romano, Steffen will spend the entire 2022-23 season with Boro. On the other hand, Man City will sign veteran Stefan Ortega as their new backup. Ortega is set to arrive as a free agent after his contract with Bundesliga side Arminia Bielefeld expired.

This will be the second loan spell for Zack Steffen since he joined City in 2019. Steffen was previously loaned to Fortuna Düsseldorf, where he had a promising start to the 2019-20 season before suffering a knee injury. The Coatesville, Pennsylvania, native returned to Manchester ahead of the 2020-21 campaign and was installed as the team’s second-choice goalie.

In the past two seasons, Steffen played 21 games in City’s jersey. Most of his appearances came in cup competitions, and he only got two appearances in the Premier League. The 27-year-old kept eight clean sheets while conceding 16 goals.

The loan to Middlesbrough will now give Steffen an opportunity to experience more action and ramp up his form before the upcoming World Cup appearance with the United States men’s national team. He is facing competition from Arsenal’s Matt Turner and Nottingham Forest’s Ethan Horvath for the No. 1 shirt.

Premier League giants Manchester City have rewarded the U.S. international goalkeeper Zack Steffen with a new contract. According to the club’s announcement on Thursday, Steffen inked an extension that will keep him at Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2025.

Steffen didn’t play much this season, being used mainly in the cup competitions and making just one Premier League appearance. Still, he was reliable when called upon, keeping two clean sheets and conceding just two goals.

Releasing a statement to confirm the news about Steffen’s new contract, Man City’s director of football Txiki Begiristain praised the USMNT’s goalie while calling him “a brilliant professional.”

“This is a man who trains to an exceptionally high standard every single day. He always wants to learn and improve,” Begiristain added. “Our coaching staff love having him here, and we want to see him continue his development over the next years.”

Zack Steffen joined Manchester City in 2019 in a $7 million transfer from the MLS side Columbus Crew. He spent the 2019-20 season in Bundesliga on loan with Fortuna Dusseldorf, where he impressed and convinced City’s coaching staff that he has what it takes to play at the highest level. The club recalled him for the 2020-21 season, and he has been serving as Premier League side’s primary backup ever since.

Steffen has made a total of 16 appearances in Manchester City’s jersey so far. He kept eight clean sheets while conceding only eight goals.

United States international goalkeeper Zack Steffen will finally get a shot with Manchester City. According to ESPN, Steffen won’t be loaned next season and will serve as the team’s backup.

Steffen officially joined City in 2019 from Columbus Crew in a $7 million transfer. However, since he didn’t qualify for a work permit at the time, the 25-year-old goalie was loaned to Bundesliga side Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Reportedly, the work permit issue is sorted out now, and Steffen is set to be on Manchester City’s roster for the 2020/21 Premier League season. He will replace Chile’s Claudio Bravo as the No.2 choice behind Ederson.

Zack Steffen was Fortuna’s starting goalie in the first part of the season and performed well in the role. However, he suffered a patella injury in early January and ended up missing the rest of 2019/20.

Steffen was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2018 and has one MLS All-Star selection to his name. He has 17 appearances for USMNT.

Columbus Crew and United States international goalkeeper Zack Steffen is close to joining Premier League powerhouse Manchester City. According to ESPN, Steffen is in contract talks with City who would pay between $7 million and $10 million to Crew for the services of the highly talented 23-year-old.

Crew manager and sporting director Gregg Berhalter confirmed that the club received an offer for Steffen but declined to give more information about the matter.

The club has been approached regarding the potential transfer of goalkeeper Zack Steffen, but no deal has been finalized, and the club will not be commenting on the specifics of reported offers,” – Berhalter told ESPN.

Zack Steffen established himself as one of the best young players in MLS since being named Crew’s starting goalkeeper ahead of 2017 season. He played a total of 63 regular season games in the league since then and managed to keep his goal intact on 22 occasions.

Steffen, who was named 2018 MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, also delivered some exciting performances for the United States men’s national team since receiving his international debut in January 2018.

In case that Zack Steffen makes a move to Man City, he would have to receive a work permit to play in England. This might be an issue since Steffen didn’t play enough international games to qualify for one. In case he gets rejected, City might end up loaning him to another club until he fulfills the requirements.
