The Dallas Cowboys welcomed their All-Pro guard Zack Martin to the training camp. Martin decided to end his holdout on Monday and rejoin the team after receiving an improved deal.

Martin made it clear earlier in the offseason that he wants a better contract that would reflect his stature as the best guard in the NFL. Cowboys’ owner and general manager Jerry Jones was initially reluctant to make changes to Martin’s original deal but eventually caved in.

Martin will now reportedly receive fully guaranteed $36 million in 2023 and 2024 compared to the $27.5 million he was supposed to earn under the terms of the six-year, $84 million extension he signed in 2018. He will now be the third highest-paid guard in the league.

“Obviously it took a little time, but I’m super grateful to the Joneses,” Martin told ESPN’s Todd Archer after inking the reworked deal. “Once we started talking and having that connection we were able to figure something out that worked for both of us.”

Zack Martin was the Cowboys’ first-round pick in 2014. Since then, he was named to the Pro Bowl eight times and had six First-Team All-Pro selections. He only missed eight games since entering the league.

Dallas Cowboys are continuing their salary cap gymnastics. Reportedly, the team has restructured right guard Zack Martin’s contract and managed to get around $8 million in salary-cap space. Cowboys did a similar thing with left tackle Tyron Smith back in August.

The reworked contract will turn $9.9 million of Martin’s $11 million salary for 2020 into a signing bonus. The 29-year-old Martin is entering the second year of a six-year, $84 million contract extension he inked back in 2018.

As Cowboys’ beat writer Clarence Hill Jr points out, the team can use the space they created to add a player this offseason or to carry over the savings into next season. It is expected that Dallas goes with the second option, as the next year’s salary cap will be lower due to the financial consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

Cowboys are probably clearing the space so they can pay their signal-caller Dak Prescott, who is in line for a massive extension next.  According to reports, Prescott is asking to be one of the highest-paid players in the game, so Dallas will need to save every cent in order to please him.

By reconstructing Martin and Smith’s contracts, the Cowboys managed to save around $15 million. The team are projected to have around $20 million in cap space that can be carried over to 2021 if they don’t make some last-minute additions.

Dallas Cowboys signed offensive guard Zack Martin to a six-year extension which is worth $84 million and includes $40 million guaranteed. If these numbers are close to reality, Martin will become the highest paid guard in NFL. The extension will keep the 27-year-old All-Pro with the franchise through 2024, and he will receive a signing bonus of $20 million. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the deal was concluded on Wednesday and should be confirmed in the upcoming days.

Dallas Cowboys and Zack Martin tried to negotiate a long-term deal in the summer of 2017 but failed to reach an agreement. The contract negotiations were put on hold once the season began, and resumed in this offseason. According to sources close to the situation, Cowboys and Martin were close to making a deal back in early May, but couldn’t come to terms about final details. These issues were ironed out in the past couple of days, which led to Martin attending Cowboys minicamp after he previously missed organized team activities.

Dallas Cowboys selected Zack Martin with the 16th overall pick in 2014 NFL Draft, although it was speculated that the organization could take Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel. Time has shown that Cowboys made a wise decision since Martin played all 64 games since entering the league while Manziel played 15 games, last being in 2015.

During his time in the league, Zack Martin earned four Pro Bowl appearance, two First-team All-Pro, and two Second-team All-Pro selections.
