Veteran tight end Zach Ertz reportedly agreed to a one-year contract with the Washington Commanders. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the deal is worth up to $5 million with incentives.

The move reunites Ertz with new Commanders’ offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. The two previously worked together when Kingsbury served as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.

Ertz was once considered one of the best tight ends in the game, making three straight Pro Bowls between 2017 and 2019 as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2018, he set the NFL record for most catches by a tight end with 116 while finishing the season with 1,163 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

However, Ertz’s production has dipped significantly in recent years as a result of injuries. This was particularly the case last season when he had just 27 catches for 187 yards in the first seven games before landing on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury.

Ertz ended up being released by the Cardinals upon his request in November and later signed with the Detroit Lions’ practice squad. However, he wasn’t featured in a single game while with the Lions.

In Washington, Ertz is expected to replace veteran Logan Thomas, who was released last week as a cap casualty. The Commanders are also expected to draft a tight end at some point in the 2024 NFL Draft.

After putting quarterback Carson Wentz on the trade market, the Philadelphia Eagles seem to be focused on parting ways with Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz now.

Multiple reports say that several teams showed interest in Ertz in recent weeks and that the Eagles are happy to take calls and listen to offers. The two teams that already had exploratory talks for the 30-year-old veteran are reportedly the Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts, according to Sports Illustrated’s Ed Kracz.

Ertz was already on the trade market last season after he and the organization couldn’t come to terms with a new deal. The Baltimore Ravens and Green Bay Packers made offers to Philly at the time, but the veteran suffered an injury that nixed a potential move.

The Indianapolis Colts seem like a natural fit for Zach Ertz, considering that former Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich is now a head coach there. The Colts are reportedly thinking about trading for Carson Wentz as well, so making a package deal could work for all parties included.

The Seattle Seahawks, on the other hand, need a No. 1 tight end after Greg Olsen decided to retire at the end of the 2020 campaign. Their current TE situation isn’t great, so adding a proven player in Ertz seems like a logical step.

Ertz emerged as one of the league’s best tight ends between 2017 and 2019. He earned three consecutive Pro Bowl nods during that period while also breaking the NFL record for most receptions by a tight end in a single season with 116 in 2018.

The 2020 season, however, saw underwhelming productivity from Ertz. In 11 games, he only managed to catch 36 passes for career-low 335 yards and one touchdown.

Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowl Zach Ertz is having a disappointing season in 2020, but even that didn’t stop teams around the NFL from exploring his availability. According to Sports Illustrated’s Ed Kracz, multiple teams made offers for Ertz in recent weeks, including Super Bowl contenders Green Bay Packers and Baltimore Ravens.

Ertz emerged as a trade candidate after he and the Eagles failed to reach an agreement on a new long-term deal. The 29-year-old tight end is reportedly asking top TE money while Philly isn’t ready to go down that route, especially with the emergence of third-year tight end Dallas Goedert.

It is unclear whether the Eagles were willing to entertain Packers and Ravens’ offers, but it makes sense for them to consider all options. Ertz has one year left on his deal and, given his reputation around the league, would certainly attract a big trade package.

Despite all the trade talk and rumors, Zach Ertz is staying in Philadelphia until the end of this season. Ertz recently landed on Injured Reserve with a minor injury designation, which makes him impossible to move ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline in early November. In the offseason, however, anything seems possible.

Ertz has been routinely Eagles’ biggest offensive weapon in recent years, clocking 549 receptions for 5,921 yards and 36 touchdowns since entering the league in 2013. He has three straight Pro Bowl nods between 2017 and 2019.

2020 is proving to be a great year for tight ends. After San Francisco 49ers’ George Kittle and Kansas City Chiefs’ Travis Kelce received massive contract extensions, Philadelphia Eagles’ Pro Bowler Zach Ertz might soon get one as well.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Eagles and Ertz re-engaged in contract talks in recent days and are working again on a new deal. The 29-year-old tight end, who made Pro Bowl each season since 2017, currently has two years left on his five-year, $42.5 million extension he inked in 2016.

Since Ertz is considered to be one of the best TEs in the game, his new deal is expected to reflect that. While he might not get a record five-year, $75 million contract like Kittle, he could top Kelce’s four-year, $57 million extension.

Zach Ertz established himself as the Eagles’ main weapon on offense in recent years and is considered the preferred target for quarterback Carson Wentz. Since Wentz was installed as Philly’s starting signal-caller in 2016, Ertz racked up astonishing 356 receptions for 3,719 yards and 26 touchdowns. This included the NFL record 116 catches in 2018.
