The Houston Astros have gone above and beyond to secure the services of their star designated hitter Yordan Álvarez for years to come. According to multiple reports, the Astros handed out a six-year extension to Álvarez that will pay him $115 million.

If the numbers are correct, then the contract represents the biggest in MLB history for a player that plays DH as his main position. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that the new deal kicks in next season and buys out three years of Álvarez’s free agency.

Álvarez made his debut for the Astros in 2019 and immediately showed he was a special player by earning All-MLB Second Team and AL Rookie of the Year honors. He was limited to just two games in 2020 after undergoing knee surgery but followed that up with a breakthrough campaign last year.

The Las Tunas, Cuba-native batted .277 for Astros in 2021 while having team-leading 33 home runs and 104 RBIs. He was even more productive in the postseason and ended up winning the ALCS MVP award after hitting .522 in the Boston Red Sox series.

Álvarez had a strong start in 2022 as well, currently hitting .272. The 24-year-old player also has 14 homers, which is third-most in the majors, and 31 RBIs in 41 games.

The Houston Astros have lost another star from their starting lineup.

Manager Dusty Baker announced that Yordan Alvarez has a knee injury that will require surgery to fix, meaning that his season is officially over. Alvarez is the reigning American League Rookie of the Year.

Alvarez was already recovering from an undisclosed injury that put him on the 10-day injury list at the start of the season. He is now back on the IL with what the team referred to as “right knee discomfort.”

The Astros offense has been sluggish this year and they were hoping that Alvarez’s return would be enough to spark some much-needed scoring. The 23-year-old player hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat of the season.

With Alvarez gone, it’s going to be an uphill battle to score runs.

The Astros are already reeling from the loss of two of their big pitchers, starter and reigning Cy Young winner Justin Verlander and their best reliever Roberto Osuna, who are both out with injuries.

Verlander was initially presumed to be out for the season, but the Astros think that there might be a chance he returns later in the year, even though it won’t be any time soon. Osuna will also be out for a long while as well with an elbow issue that’s keeping him on the IL.

Alvarez was named the third Rookie of the Year winner in the history of the Astros franchise, and the first since the franchise was moved to the American League in 2013.

It’s no surprise to see why the Cuban power hitter won the award in unanimous fashion. The other two finalists, the Orioles’ John Means and the Rays’ Brandon Lowe, had impressive debuts, but couldn’t come close to match Alvarez’s production for the AL pennant-winning Astros.

Alvarez, who made his debut in June, hit .313 and blasted 27 home runs in only 313 at-bats. He made his presence known immediately after being called up, blasting the first of many home runs that he would hit over the summer in his June 9th debut against the Baltimore Orioles.

The season put together by Alvarez was, in fact, historic. He posted the highest OPS mark by any rookie with over 300 plate appearances in a single season in the history of the league.

The Astros have a young slugger in their midst that should become one of the league’s top bats over the next several seasons.
