The Mets’ big slugger Yoenis Cespedes has barely played over the past three seasons due to various injuries that have hampered him greatly and kept him from playing at all last season.

It appears that thanks to the introduction of the designated hitter into the National League in 2020, the Cuban star will have a new, lesser-risk position on the diamond where he will play.

Instead of manning the outfield as he has done for the majority of his career, Cespedes revealed in a Tuesday press conference that he has been told that he will at least begin the season as the team’s designated hitter.

Cespedes, a key member of the Mets’ 2015 National League champion club and a 2016 NL All-Star, has only managed to play in a total of 119 games over the past three seasons.

This lack of playing time coincided with a 4-year, $110 million contract that the Mets gave to Cespedes in 2017, considered to have been one of the worst deals in the recent era of baseball.

The Mets will hope that Cespedes will be able to stay healthy and help the team in the 60-game 2020 season, something which playing in the role of the designated hitter should, in theory, help him to do.

The New York Mets’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is set to return to baseball after almost two years of absence. According to the team’s general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, Mets are optimistic that Cespedes will be ready for the start of the 2020 MLB season.

Cespedes last played in early 2018, appearing in 38 games and batting .262 with nine home runs and 29 RBIs. He missed the rest of 2018 and the whole of 2019 due to heel and ankle fracture injuries.

But it appears that the break due to coronavirus pandemic allowed the two-time All-Star to recover and return to action.

”We’ll have to evaluate how the next few days go, but we’re optimistic,” said Van Wagenen in a chat with reporters on Monday. ”His bat can be a real impact and be a little bit of a separator for us as we compare ourselves to the rest of the teams in the league.”

Yoenis Cespedes has been with the Mets since 2015, joining the franchise in a trade from Detroit Tigers. Since then, he made one All-Star appearance and has Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards.

Cespedes, who also spent time with Oakland Athletics and Boston Red Sox, has .274 career batting average with 163 home runs and 524 RBIs.

Elsewhere in his talks with reporters, Van Wagenen said the team expects all players to report to Spring Training this week. Among them should be right fielder Michael Conforto, who recovered from muscle strained suffered back in March.

Back in February, New York Mets’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes expressed hope that he will manage to return and play baseball this season after undergoing heel surgeries towards the end of 2018. That won’t happen, however, as Mets announced on Thursday that Cespedes underwent another surgery, this time on his ankle, and is officially ruled out for the season.

According to Mets’ general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, Cespedes broke his right ankle in “a violent fall” on his Florida ranch.

Yoenis Cespedes joined New York Mets in 2015 from Detroit Tigers in a trade that saw pitchers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa going in the opposite direction. Cespedes helped the Mets to World Series appearance in his first year with the organization, while playing on an All-Star level in his second year, which brought him a four-year, $110 million contract.

After signing the new deal, Cespedes struggled to stay on the field and missed significant time with hip and hamstring injuries. He managed to play only 119 games since 2017, but produced well during that time, batting .282 with 26 home runs.

Cespedes’ career stats include .274 batting average, 163 homers and 524 RBIs. He has two All-Star appearances and Gold Glove Award to go with Silver Slugger Award.

New York Mets’ outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is keeping a positive mindset about his return to baseball after undergoing surgery on both heels in the summer. Cespedes, who played his last MLB game back in July, recently talked with reporters and said that he will be back on the field in 2019.

“I do feel like I will return. … It may be three months, it may be two months, it may be one month, but at this point, I do think I can return,” – said Cespedes. “When I do return, I plan on being 100 percent, like I was in 2015.”

According to the 33-year-old, although he is still a long way to go in the recovery process he feels like he is making great progress.

“I can’t even say at the moment that I’m at 50 percent, but when I used to wake up [pre-surgery], I would struggle walking. But now, even at this stage of the rehab, I can definitely walk without any pain,” – he added.

Yoenis Cespedes joined New York Mets from Detroit Tigers in 2015, and helped the team to reach the World Series in his first season. After another impressive season, he signed a four-year contract, $110 million contract in 2016. Unfortunately for the Mets, he never managed to justify the money he received as he started struggling with injuries and managed to play just 119 games since then.

Cespedes’ career MLB stats include .274 batting average, 163 homers, and 524RBI.
